The warm sands of North Avenue Beach make up the classroom floor of Sun and Moon Beach Yoga, and the crashing waves of Lake Michigan serve as the soundtrack. Throughout the summer, certified yoga instructors lead students of all experience levels through Vinyasa-style yoga techniques, away from bikers, beachgoers, and running teams of David Hasselhoff impersonators. In addition to yoga classes, the studio hosts bi-weekly workshops, including specialty yoga classes geared toward runners and volleyball players.
One hundred fitness tones muscles and increases endurance with Pilates, personal training, and group dance classes. The accredited staff includes such versatile instructors as Kyle Seguin, an ACE-certified personal trainer who spent eight years in the Alabama Ballet and teaches ballet, Pilates, and anatomy at Columbia College Chicago. One hundred fitness aims to improve various body functions, including core strength, posture, flexibility, and lung capacity—just in time for fall leaf-blowing activities.
Chicago Children's Theatre's productions sprout up on stages in and around the city, inspiring families' imaginations and engaging Chicago's diverse communities. Past seasons have staged adaptations of books, such as Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Kafka's The Metamorphosis, and interactive parable plays geared toward toddlers and their teddy bears. Committed to making theater accessible to all, the troupe's Red Kite Project composes multisensory works tailored to children with autism.
A cornucopia of sketch comedy performances spills from Stage 773, revamped in 2011 with a full-scale renovation that created four intimate stages from the initial too-intimate 773 stages. Longtime Chicago performers Brian Posen, Jill Valentine, and Brian Peterlin helm the theater, where they host the annual Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival every January to often sold-out crowds. They also draw in local acts and hold a weekly open-mic night called SMUSH, which welcomes sketch groups, improv troupes, and comedians.
Inspired by the award-winning Signature Theatre Company in New York, Eclipse Theatre Company devotes each season to a single playwright, with past seasons spotlighting seminal scribes such as Tennessee Williams, Neil Simon, and Arthur Miller. Eclipse is one of the only companies in the Midwest to take this approach, enabling audiences to become fluent in a particular playwright's language and more quickly identify their use of silent letters.
For more than a decade, House Theatre has devoted itself to creating experiences that emphasize the magic of live theater. First achieving prominence with its supernatural thriller The Sparrow, the outfit has gone on to win 17 Joseph Jefferson Awards and Broadway in Chicago’s Emerging Theater Award. Dedicated to daring storytelling, House Theatre’s productions weave resonant music with mechanical feats of onstage magic to create fully immersive experiences that dazzle audiences and convince actors that they can never go back to the real world or their real families.
