The certified instructors at Scooter Tow Hang Gliding School have designed their curriculum to encourage potential students that hang-gliding can be for anyone. In doing so, they introduce beginners to the sport gradually by scheduling flights in the early morning and late afternoon—when the atmosphere is at its calmest—and having them start by only going 2–3 feet off the ground. Once they're more experienced, flyers can join the crew for organized brewery tours and the school's hang-gliding club.
Tatyana Seamans opened Academy of Advanced Esthetic to share her prodigious aesthetic expertise with dedicated students. Seamans acquired her first license as a medical aesthetician while in the former U.S.S.R., sparking a quest for knowledge that led to seven more licenses and certifications, as well as the undying love of an enchanted princess. Seamans' 600- and 750-hour aesthetician's licensing programs exceed state requirements so her students develop skincare mastery with more hands-on, clinical experience. A menu of pampering treatments for face and body reveals her certification as a PCA Skin product specialist. Continuing-education classes highlight Seamans' proficiency with high-tech treatments such as light therapy and microdermabrasion, which promote cellular rejuvenation and hair reduction for spa clientele.
The nine holes of St. John’s Northwestern Golf Course curl around the outdoor athletic facilities on the campus of its namesake military academy. Players shoot through a par-36 grass-pelted puzzle where they must contend with numerous trees as they negotiate the course’s 3,060 yards. The Storm family manages the facility, welcoming visitors with a brand of hospitality honed over a career in the golf business that dates back to 1952, the year the smile was invited.
In the late 1970s career educators Eileen and Raymond Huntington opened the first Huntington Learning Center in Oradell, New Jersey. Their goal was to take an individualized approach to education, adjusting instructional tactics according to each student's set of needs. Their success in helping K–12 students prepare for exams and improve grades and study skills quickly spawned franchises across New York, New Jersey, and elsewhere.
Today, the certified Huntington tutoring staff utilizes testing and rubrics for assessing each child's skills, academic needs and potential for growth. The teachers even note the student's behavior in different testing and academic situations to craft a methodology sensitive to each child's learning style. Teachers also adhere to the company's code of ethics that stresses professionalism and confidentiality and encourages pupils to improve their grades honestly through dedicated study rather than shortcuts.
A former private detective and bodyguard, Tim draws upon his firsthand experience to teach self-defense skills and safety procedures at Wisconsin Concealed Carry Training Academy. In courses with or without a shooting component, the NRA-certified instructor creates an interactive, comfortable environment for students to learn about safe weapon handling and storage, the parts of a firearm, and state gun laws. Though he trains pupils in shooting fundamentals at a local outdoor range, Tim also stresses self-protection alternatives such as pepper spray. Once classes wrap up, he happily answers any lingering questions.
Michaela Torcaso, the owner and CEO of Tibia Healing Center, couldn't decide what the world needed more—inner or outer peace—so she decided to give it both. The former begins its incubation in the massage school, where aspiring massage therapists spend 675 hours training for their certification. From there, calm is channeled through graduates' hands and into the minds and muscles of the clients of the Tibia Healing Center, where myriad modalities address everything from injury to stress from trying to balance a checkbook on one's nose.
When she's not planting the seeds of inner peace in her clients, Tibia's owner is spreading it outwards through her nonprofit, Creating a Peaceful World, which volunteers healing bodywork services to individuals including the families of murder victims and charity participants. Torcaso also offers scholarships to aspiring massage therapists who need financial assistance to pursue their education.
