Cofounded by dancing legend Fred Astaire to train new generations of rug cutters with his signature easy grace, Fred Astaire Dance Studio uses a unique curriculum to create comfort on the dance floor. Instructors start with steps and rhythms common to most social dances, steadily building toward more specialized combinations of moves for a variety of rhythm-dance styles such as cha-cha and samba and smooth-dance styles such as the foxtrot and waltz. Once they've learned to follow, lead, or just pare down unnecessary finger-snaps, students can take to the purple-walled dance floor to practice their steps and try on new partners at social parties.

Some of Tameka's fondest memories involve twirling batons and wowing crowds as she marched in Mardi Gras parades. As the director of Girlz N Motion Texas location, she gets to pass on those skills to a new generation, and give them a chance to build their own lasting memories. In her community-minded studio, she leads classes for girls between the ages of 5 and 18, incorporating choreographed dance moves into the twirling routines. The cooperation required not only builds up each troupe's repertoire, but also teaches the students how to work together as a team. She also aims to instill a sense of individual empowerment in her students as they develop from fumble-prone twirlers to show-stopping entertainers able to whirl two batons at once. Bringing it all full cirlce, she gives members the opportunity to head to Mardi Gras parades and show off their own brand of flair during the nation's most celebrated spectacle.

While the performance and parade are thrilling aspects of the classes, Tameka says the students are what makes it all worthwhile. "I'm doing what I've always loved," she says,"Teaching you ladies a skill, how to act as a leader, and getting [them] physically fit."

Q&A with Albert Hughes, Owner

What is one fun, unusual fact about your business?

We don't charge belt testing fees. This is rare for many martial arts schools. It is our pleasure to award a belt to a deserving student.

As the old adage says, "Stuff happens." What training do you and your staff have to stay ahead of the unexpected?

We keep a well-stocked first aid kit.
