Fit for Life spurs the physiques of clients into shape by hosting motivating and fun workouts that sprawl across a 15,000-square-foot facility. Exercisers can flash membership passes to gain access to group classes and boot-camp sessions piloted by seasoned fitness instructors. During boot camp, participants begin with measurements that guide them in creating attainable goals, before sweating away calories in classes that, like police officers pulling over an 18-wheeler for carrying too many tubas, emphasize weight loss; click here to see the boot came schedule. Various cardio and strength-training equipment, two racquetball courts, and a full basketball court help coax beads of perspiration and chiseled muscles out of hiding. When Forrest Folen says he believes in a mind-and-body approach to fitness, he isn’t referring to pseudo-spiritual workouts. Rather, he is drawing from the simple advice given to him by his grandmother: “Take care of your body, and your body will take care of your mind. Take care of your mind, and your mind will take care of your life.” His partner Roy Schuhmacher, on the other hand, comes at fitness from a strictly physical angle. Fueled by a personal goal to become a bodybuilder when he was younger, he turned to scientific methods and empirical data to craft his regimens. This research eventually led him to the slow and steady approach to bulking up that he uses today. In 2008, both Folen and Schuhmacher joined forces, bringing their unique mix of perspectives and exercise approaches to the public at Fit for Life Solutions.
Through their studio, the two trainers slim bodies with large group boot-camp sessions, tame waistlines with Next Level personal training, and accelerate heart rates during intensive small group exercises that incorporate kettlebells and industrial-grade defibrillators.
Fitness industry veteran Dulcinea Lee Hellings's goal is to bring a high-quality, effective exercise regimen to people who don't love big gyms or can't afford personal trainers. In 2004, she realized that mornings could be used for more than hitting the snooze button over and over for two hours, and founded Boot Camp "Morning Crunch!" to help fledgling exercisers whip into shape.
She designs her all-levels programs to be scream-free morning motivators⎯the first stop in her patrons' journey of daily accomplishments. The fast-paced, ever-changing circuit of strength and cardio exercises keeps bodies guessing and minds from becoming bored. Each of the boot camp's 12 outdoor locations has a different dedicated trainer who gets to know each student personally, remembering their names and memorizing any interesting freckle patterns. They complement their morning routines with a smattering of evening options for those who prefer to work out after the day's activities.
Butterfly Yoga's staff channels its experience and love of movement through the practice of yoga. Butterfly's courses encourage students of all experience levels and ages, from kids to seniors, to get fit, build self-awareness, and increase their ability to out-maneuver bendy straws. With an emphasis on a supportive environment and compassionate guidance, instructors seek to inspire self-exploration through movement and meditation. Additionally, Butterfly Yoga holds donations-based classes periodically each month to share yoga with more people in the community.
Jeff Smith, a college swim coach and swim-club aquatics director, and Joan Smith, an NCAA all-American swimmer and triathlete, joined forces to open a swim academy that teaches youngsters how to swim safely while having fun. The pair operates two facilities, each with its own heated pool staffed by instructors who have all graduated from King's Swim Academy's training program. Their program begins with Parent and Me classes for kids as young as 6 months old, which introduce children to the water and teach basic skills such as kicking and changing their own diaper underwater. As students progress through the levels, they eventually learn skills such as freestyle swimming, backstroke, flip turns, and survival swimming. Instructors also lead a swim-technique and fitness class that prepares swimmers for swim team while promoting a healthy lifestyle and honing stroke skills.
When the climbers of Planet Granite say that community anchors everything they do, they have a history of outreach to back it up. After Castle Rock State Park appeared on California’s closure list, Planet Granite’s team quickly organized a fundraiser to save the sanctuary. They pledged $10,000 in matching funds, threw an auction, scheduled guest speakers, and obtained support from companies such as REI. In one night, they raised $20,725.
This kind of response has typified Planet Granite’s team since opening its first facility in 1994. One of the first climbing gyms in the country, Planet Granite has expanded to three gyms in Belmont, San Francisco, and Sunnyvale. The diverse array of climbing resources at each location led Popsugar to name the gym conglomerate one of the top five in San Francisco in 2011. At the Sunnyvale location, members scale 25,000 square feet of climbable surfaces that ascend from low bouldering terrains to 60-foot walls.
In keeping with their commitment to community, the staff tailors instruction and climbing routes to every ability level and affinity for hand sweatiness. They also supervise each gyms’ fully equipped fitness centers, ranging from CrossFit to yoga, which provides a peaceful counterbalance to the full-body workout of rock climbing.
