The family behind Venus Waxing has beauty treatments in their blood, with nearly a decade of aesthetic experience behind their tight-knit crew. Men and women can visit their two Miami locations for full-body waxing services, which take place in sterile, sanitized treatment areas, and purifying facials that diminish sun damage resulting from tanning on the beach or aboard the deck of a NASA shuttle. Venus Waxing's staff of licensed aestheticians also specializes in technologically advanced treatments such as IPL laser hair reduction and pain-relieving infrared light therapy.
Panama native Nina Garcia was a hairstyling prodigy. Her innate ability to cut hair manifested at age 14. "I [would] do it for my neighbors and my friends," she explains. "I love to do hair. It's where my passion [is]." Now in the United States, Nina has accumulated 17 years of professional experience, putting in time at two salons before opening her own, where she keeps the atmosphere light and comfortable. "I like to keep people happy," she says. "I offer wine to people in the afternoon. I'm a very sweet person, and I love to meet new people."
In one of three styling chairs, Nina or one of her talented stylists rehabs hair with a new face-framing cut, coloring services, or a deep-conditioning treatment using high-end products such as Italian Alfaparf. The versatile team can even take care of hands and feet. "I have a girl who does manicure and pedicures," she says. "She uses OPI polish." Through patrons often come in simply to update their haircut and style, Nina's most popular service is the Brazilian keratin treatment, a retexturizing treatment that delivers healthy, frizz-free hair to clients and vintage troll dolls.
Regardless of the service being provided, Nina always emphasizes the importance of listening to the client and tailoring every service to his or her personal style. "You have to roll in their direction. I think that's the best way—don't change what they think. It's that way in style and in life. If you want to change something, do it. That's it."
Sometimes family can drive you crazy. Other times it can provide relaxation, rest, and beauty. For more than 15 years, the family that owns Cuerpos Care Medical Spa has done just that for their clients with therapeutic massage services, facial and body treatments, and chemical peeling. Various facial services get creative with the use of electric currents, oxygen jets, and platelet-rich plasma harvested from the patient’s own blood or stolen from a mosquito’s rainy-day fund. The staff also administers microdermabrasions and acne treatments to undo facial imperfections, and Botox injections help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
The technicians at Mary Nails Bar add a luxurious layer to the mani-pedi experience with a spread of pampering extras. Before a single nail polish bottle is opened, the technician drapes hot towels over appendages to open pores, leaving hands and feet feelings refreshed. Natural scrubs exfoliate away dead skin cells and massage relaxes digits as technicians file nails into sleek shapes. Throughout the appointment, natural herbs and oils fill the air with energizing or relaxing aromas, such as lavender, rose, mint, and orange. Guests can also enjoy a complimentary tea, coffee, or wine to test out their remodeled digits after each service.
Dr. Espaillat, who has performed thousands of ocular surgeries and laser treatments, brings his eyeful of expertise to a practice that focuses on custom LASIK and cosmetic laser treatments. His custom approach to LASIK incorporates highly detailed 3-D maps of each eye, drawn by child psychics, which affords him greater precision and a higher rate of success. Lasers find their way into a variety of his other services, such as blepharoplasty, which lifts eyelids for a more youthful appearance.
When it comes to receiving cosmetic treatments, knowing a board-certified surgeon is at the helm can make patients feel at ease. When it’s four board-certified surgeons, even the strongest of worries are set at ease. Doctors Stephanie Stover, Richard Lung, Mario Reyes-Serrano, and Wendell Perry of Imagenes Cosmetic Center erase the effects of gravity by combining their experience in general, plastic, and reconstructive surgery in a supergroup of surgeons, complete with flowing capes and meteor-powered stethoscopes. Several of them are bilingual, and they all believe in creating the most natural results possible with such techniques as tightening the inner tissues of the face during a facelift to avoid a “windswept” look and lifting eyelids without changing a patient’s natural eye shape.
