At Yoga Monkey + Fitness, Aleasha Sholes and Angie Howard want all of their staff and students to behave like monkeys. The co-owners covet the animal's playful spirit, physical poise, and social nature, encouraging guests to embrace these qualities with a variety of classes. Whether they are leading Vinyasa yoga sequences or kickboxing jabs in their two workout studios, their constructive attitudes boost both moods and heart rates. They continuously strive to redefine each student's limits, though they never lose sight of the ideal balance among work, play, and meditation dream duels. Their health-care backgrounds—Aleasha was a nurse, and Angie devises wellness programs for independent and assisted-living facilities—give them the anatomical know-how to customize their programs based on different strength levels.

The name, KnowSweat, is more than a hollow boast. The instructors have amassed years of martial-arts and personal-training experience, they and hold an accreditation from the American Council on Exercise Faculty. In that capacity, instructors train other fitness professionals in pursuit of continuing-education credits, and they bring that same level of expertise to every class they teach.

The teachers anchor many of the gym's workouts in martial-arts maneuvers, incorporating fast-paced punches and kicks into cardio routines like a ninja with a short attention span on a treadmill. Students jump rope, shadow box, and fling high-flying roundhouses at one another. All the while, heavy pads strapped to hands and forearms absorb the impact.

Sweat sessions utilize a variety of exercises and disciplines to produce full-body results in a supportive environment, ideal for beginners and hard-core core-hardeners alike. During any class, motivational instructors will use the instinctual distrust of routine to their advantage. Begin a day of litigating with a refreshing early-morning boot-camp session, or wind down by burning evidence and pounds with a late-evening yoga class. Muscles are kept guessing with new and challenging moves during each session, so participants never fall into a boring, ineffective routine, such as regular teeth brushing. In addition to the fitness classes, students receive a success guide to help prepare for imminent pound loss, a nutrition guide, and a $100 gift certificate for individual coaching. Because the pass sets a 10-class cap at any given location, roving fitness mavens can further shake up their workout regimens by vetting a series of classes or instructors that work best for them.

Though the coaches at Integrated Academy hail from widely varying backgrounds—from firefighter to professional football player to military and law enforcement agent—they share a common goal: to teach students how to fight and defend themselves. They push men, women, and children of all abilities toward toughening up in a variety of combat classes, including boxing, MMA, and Muay Thai—also known as the science of eight limbs, as it incorporates striking with the elbows and knees. To help pupils pump up their strength and self-confidence, they also teach the art of self-defense, which can help you escape assailants and boring fencers at parties. They slow down the pace a bit for little ones, teaching them to effectively grapple and dodge hooks during kids-only MMA classes. In addition to combat-style classes, the coaches also lead boot camp classes to help clients whip into shape without directly confronting aggressive punching bags.

A haven of learning by day, Integrated Academy moonlights as a boxing arena on select evenings, during which a group of esteemed fighters enter the ring to duke it out.

It's one thing to know how to kick and punch. It's a different thing entirely to know how and when to use those self-defense techniques to stay safe in a real-life situation. The instructors at Impact Martial Arts don't teach karate and kickboxing because the uniforms look cool—though that doesn't hurt. They want their students to be able to defend themselves with practical, efficient techniques. The curriculum is designed for various age groups and incorporates techniques from disciplines such as krav maga and Brazilian jujitsu. In addition to helping you get through Batman's vacation days unscathed, training at Impact Martial Arts can significantly boost your physical stamina and self-confidence.
