Led by linguistic anthropologist Dr. Jill Bishop, Multilingual Connections’ international staff of instructors immerses students in one of more than a dozen foreign languages, including French, Arabic, Spanish, and Mandarin. The immersive classes are intended to incorporate fun as well as language. While parents stay with kids up to age 3, older pupils can learn on their own. This gives guardians a chance to run errands or sip complimentary coffee while browsing WiFi in the center's cafe.
The instructors at Multilingual Connections delve even further into each language’s respective culture by always making time to converse about specific foods, holidays, and folk traditions. Dr. Bishop's young son even attends the classes, showing his family's love of multilingualism early. The woman-owned business works to connect pupils, whether children, adults, or corporate clients, to the rest of the world with classes as well as translation and interpretation services in 75 languages.
On a trip to Chicago from his native Italy, young Mario Tricoci changed his life forever. The fledgling hairdresser stopped in at a prestigious salon, where he impressed the owner with his impeccable display of skill and landed himself a job. The next six decades brought strings of industry awards and the opening of his very own salon, which soon exploded into 26 locations in four states. With his styling prowess proven both to the industry and to the clients he encountered each day, the coiffeur decided to share his gift with others. In 2004, he established Tricoci University to foster a new generation of cosmetologists and spa technicians trained to thrive in the luxury-spa industry.
Throughout the Midwest, Tricoci protégés study a rigorous curriculum in high-end salon and spa surroundings to learn how to create beautiful hairdos, choose skin-flattering cosmetics, and beautify nails and skin. A team of experienced industry professionals readies pupils for the beauty world with in-depth classes, and outside education arrives via video demonstrations and guest-artist lectures on Vidal Sassoon's Wedge-Bob Postulate. More advanced students get a preview of their career to come by beautifying real people during instructor-supervised treatments, which lend the stylist essential experience as the client enjoys a pampering session at a discounted rate.
Since 2006 our goal is to bring Brazilian culture to the Windy City. We are the only Portuguese language school in Chicago and we take that responsibility very seriously. We're also the Brazilian Cultural Center of the Midwest, and offer Samba dance classes as well as monthly cultural events.
Chicago Photography Center is a nonprofit organization that aims to enlighten shutterbugs of all skill levels through specialized, seven-week classes. Seasoned instructors draw on years of experience when leading weekly rendezvous, which last two to three hours and cover topics such as proper equipment usage, composition, and how to embarrass a sibling on his or her first date. Fundamentals of Studio Portrait Lighting introduces camera wielders to different up-close illumination techniques, and Fundamentals of Digital Photography and Film sessions lead students in creating photographs before processing them in labs or darkrooms. The intermediate-level digital class reviews both Photoshop and Lightroom, leaving pupils with the ability to organize files, resize photographs for electronic mailings, or save a family portrait from the photobombing ghost of Warren G. Harding. Click here for the current class schedule.
Creator of the conversational Cortez Method of Spanish lessons, Juan Guillermo Cortez started the Spanish Language Center in 2001 to expand the lessons he learned as a private Spanish teacher. With a stable of trained instructors, the school guides students of all skill levels through the intricacies of Spanish speaking during conversational group classes. Conversation-focused classes range from introductory courses that lay out Spanish-language basics, such as grammar and how to roll an r with the confidence of an archaeologist playing Operation, to advanced-level lessons on commands and the subjunctive tense. Each class hosts an average of 6–12 students and, like a sturdy soapbox, includes ample opportunity to practice speaking skills. In addition to providing all necessary materials, teachers also unlock access to an online class system full of updates and information.
Though many tutoring services focus on bringing struggling students up to par, the certified teachers and math specialists at North Shore Whiz Kids, LLC, are equally adept at keeping advanced students challenged. Tutors can cover all basic subjects, but the company’s main focus is preparing kids for accelerated math placement through a fun, engaging mix of games, hands-on learning aids, and direct instruction. To put students at ease, meetings take place in their own homes or a location of their choice, minimizing the distractions of an unfamiliar environment such as a classroom or a roller coaster.
