At more than 900 learning centers across the world, Sylvan offers kids a leg up through personalized, one-on-one programs prescribed by an in-depth skills assessment. Students build on past lessons to learn progressively, and sessions may hone in on different disciplines, granting kids the confidence to interpret literature and the rhetorical skills needed to negotiate a later bedtime. The positive mindset of personable, invested instructors helps to inspire kids to greater academic feats, as does a prize program that rewards hard work with CDs and gift cards.
Basics and Beyond is a personal training program with a certified roster of trainers, nutritionists, and rehab specialists headlined by director and fitness expert Dan DeFigio, who has been featured on Dr. Phil. During a personal training session (a $65 value per hour), exercise routines will exorcise soft bodies, resulting in the mass exodus of malicious fat cells to unveil a slimmer, toner soul satchel. Through nutritional analysis, a personal trainer advises clients on which items in their cabinets are their allies, and which items are gateways to higher-caloric meals.
The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous study facilities understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews.
Tutors work with students from kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results. After-school and summer classes can ready high-schoolers for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college-admissions officers with their superior essay-writing skills.
Grace Ghazarian’s passion for health has taken her around the world. After tending to patients in Uganda and Mumbai and spending seven years caring for critically ill children in a pediatric cardiac intensive-care unit, the registered nurse decided to share her lifesaving skills with others. She started Precious Hearts to teach CPR, AED use, and first aid to babysitters, teachers, parents, and health-care providers, and anyone who wants to be ready to help in a crisis.
Students can sign up for noncertification or certification courses to learn essential skills in a hands-on format. Precious Hearts also trains friends and family members during in-home CPR parties, which never require RSVPs from demonstration dummies.
