When Carissa Ballard was a little girl, she revamped her dolls' hairdos and slathered her brothers' faces with her own special concoctions. Her youthful experiments gave way to an interest in alternative health and herbology and eventually led her to become a registered massage therapist with specialties in lymphatic drainage, reiki, and craniosacral therapy. When she isn’t honing her massage talents in educational courses and apprenticeships, Carissa volunteers her skills as a clinical aesthetician to organizations such as Look Good...Feel Better, a nonprofit dedicated to boosting the self-esteem of cancer and burn survivors. With such a diverse skill set, Carissa needed a place where she could consolidate all of her talents under one roof. Thus, she opened European Day Spa of Fredericksburg in 1998. As its name implies, the spa invokes the most luxurious corners of Europe, from the opulent interiors of Paris to the plush kneading tables of a Roman pizzeria. Its slate of skin-therapy and body treatments includes spa packages with add-ons such as carriage rides and rooftop wine preludes.

Dominic Alonzo doesn’t know how to slow down. Over the past four years he’s zoomed from a Paul Mitchell student to a behind-the-scenes regular at local photo shoots to the owner of his very own space, Salon DMA. Comparing hairstyling to songwriting, the passionate stylist doesn’t view the daily salon grind as work, but rather as an outlet for expressing his inner thoughts, feelings, and hatred for split ends. When not readying models for various publications, such as Papercut magazine and Stilo, Dominic can be found treating everyday men and women to expert cuts and color treatments. He creates awe-inspiring shine with full and partial highlights and graduates hair color from light to dark using the ombre technique. Dominic also keeps hair strong and healthy by soaking it in deep-conditioning glosses, treating it with Awapuhi products, and tying it around dumbbells.

Owners Israel De Leon and Daniel Rodriguez value restoration. That much is clear after a visit to Landmark Salon and Spa, their Paul Mitchell focus salon, where staffers renew appearances inside a historical water power plant. By renovating their clients’ bodies, stylists and skin technicians hope to rebuild their confidence. They also offer massages to ease tense muscles and facials that use Dermalogica products to leave skin clear, exfoliated, and as hydrated as a sponge soaking in a puddle of Gatorade.
