Founded by cellist Kenneth Freudigman and violist Emily Watkins Freudigman in 2004, Camerata San Antonio brings together a symphonic roster composed of several of the San Antonio Symphony's principal players and more than a few internationally recognized musicians. More than a dozen acclaimed artists might be on-call for a concert during any given season, and the entourage's diverse concert schedule consequently offers plenty of strikingly different small-ensemble performances.

This spring, the Twin Elm Guest Ranch hosts the Bandera Chuckwagon Races in a three-day-long equi-centric event that gratifies guests with food, camping, arena events, and more. The ranch spans across more than 250 acres of scenic hills, woods, trails, and rivers, which guests can easily access by teaming up with a horse and doing their best centaur impressions ($35 per hour). On Friday, May 13, the festivities will begin with the 8 a.m. chuck wagon breakfast, and later that night, ticket holders can enjoy the 8 p.m. Twin Elm Buckle Series Rodeo. In addition to watching bull riding, barrel racing, and calf roping, guests can enjoy mounting their own saddled sidekick for a 9 a.m. trail ride on May 14 before cheering on the chuck wagon racers.

Since 1925, Crider’s weekly shindigs have filled the air with the warm aromas of barbecue and the jovial sonic bouquet of live country music, cavorting dancers, and one of the state’s longest-running rodeos. Contemporary cowboys compete for cash in six rodeo events that showcase incredible abilities in bull riding, barrel racing, and encouraging a steer to squeeze a stress ball instead of bucking. Younger vaqueros get a chance to flaunt their skills as they mutton-bust and calf-scramble. Post-rodeo, the outdoor stage comes alive with crooning musicians including the Dirt Road Gypsies on August 20 and Jeff Griffith on September 3. Twirling figures do-si-do under the shade of massive oaks, creating spectacle of spinning as impressive as a runaway carousel as revelers feast upon fried catfish and burgers from Crider’s café or shoot pool in the adjoining game room.
