Winemakers from across Virginia convene at the Lake Anna Wine Festival, a gathering launched in 2013. Those winemakers pour samples of their vineyards' varietals while food vendors serve snacks and artisans show their crafts. Though the wine is solely for the 21-and-older crowd, there's entertainment for the whole family. The festival takes place in Cutalong, a scenic golf-course community along Lake Anna.

United Social Sports brings recreational athletes together to socialize and showcase their hand-eye coordination. Free agents or team-sized groups register for the organization’s casual coed leagues dedicated to traditional sports such as softball and volleyball as well as carnival games such as cornhole and skee-ball. Each league hosts 6–8 weekly matches, which culminate in a final tournament and an end-of-season party—much like youth-sports leagues, but with postgame drink specials.

Raspberry Falls: 18 holes | Par 72 | 7,191 yards from the tips | Five tee options

Caddy's Report: Reminiscent of a course in the British Isles, Raspberry Falls whisks golfers across rippling terrain outfitted with streams, bunkers, and stone walls. In past lives, this property hosted fox hunts and was also a raspberry farm, which explains the name and the wild raspberry bushes growing about today.

Bull Run Golf Club: 18 holes | Par 72 | 6,961 yards from the tips | Five tee options

Caddy's Report: Water hazards come into play from the very first hole, where a pond lies in wait to swallow up balls that don't carry or aren't fitted with mini propellers. Located in the foothills of Bull Run Mountain, the course fluctuates between wide open fairways and challenging stretches hemmed in by rows of trees.

Old Hickory Golf Club: 18 holes | Par 72 | 7,077 yards from the tips | Five tee options

Caddy's Report: Every hole at Old Hickory is bunkered, and fast greens mean players must practice caution. To that end, mounded fairways also cause balls to bounce back toward the middle of the fairway?skilled golfers can take advantage of this feature by using the mounds to move shots forward.

Augustine Golf Club: 18 holes | Par 71 | 6,817 yards from the tips | Five tee options

Caddy's Report: Emerald-green fairways and white bunkers set against a darkened hardwood forest provides a lesson in contrast, but players can't be lulled by this club's beauty. Several holes readily decimate scores, including the 572-yard fourth hole, which features a double dogleg and a particularly tiny green.

Designed by famed course architect P.B. Dye, The Gauntlet Golf Club's 18-hole course is cleaved between dense woodlands and the lake at Curtis Memorial Park for 6,857 yards of challenging golf. Across the par-72 layout, golfers dig their spikes into zoysia fairways and steer balls over smooth, bentgrass greens while lecturing wedges about effective lawn-care techniques. The course’s signature hole—the par-4 fourth—begins with a forced carry over marshland and precise approach shots onto a three-tiered green, showcasing a number of memorable shot-making opportunities.

The verdant grounds also feature a 20-stall driving range, practice bunker, and chipping area. Three instructors are also on hand ready to spread their golf wisdom in lessons, clinics, and heart-warming memoirs about how they overcame the yips.

For the past four decades, on certain frosty December days, guides have led visitors through the streets of Fredericksburg's historic district. Now in its 43rd year, the Annual Candlelight Tour still illuminates the centuries-old town's stately buildings with re-tellings of historical happenings and the soft glow of candlelight. On certain nights, after glimpsing the town as it was seen long before electricity or the invention of horseback riding, tour groups gather for a cocktail party.

The Annual Candlelight Tour introduces visitors to some of Fredericksburg's historic sites which have born witness to Colonial and Civil War history. At sites such as Kenmore Plantation, Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, and the Mary Washington House, exhibits and costumed interpreters help keep the area's rich history alive. Fredericksburg and its surrounding towns also draw visitors with outdoor and artistic attractions ranging from historic trolley tours to theatrical performances.
