More than three decades ago, educator Larry Martinek set out on a mission to develop a curriculum that would radically change the traditional approach to teaching math. Noting a "disconnect between students' basic skills training and the curriculum they [must] master in the years to come," Larry created an original teaching method designed to turn students into miniature mathematicians capable of thinking critically to solve problems. His approach, which he describes as the cultivation of number sense, strives to sharpen students? math instincts, rather than drill them with repetitive, memory-based exercises or force them to blackmail accountants to crunch the numbers. Soon after students began using Larry's method, their test scores began to rise. In the spring of 2002, Larry's dream came true. Peter Markovitz and David Ullendorff, leaders in the education industry, made Larry and his curriculum the driving force of Mathnasium. Larry introduced his curriculum as the Mathnasium Method.
Today, Mathnasium centers can be found throughout the world. Informed by Larry's visionary innovations, the program's tutors give personalized coaching that focuses on bolstering critical thinking through written materials and mental math, forsaking many of the teaching tools found in a traditional classroom. In addition, the tutors also focus on boosting students' enthusiasm for the subject, helping them overcome a lack of confidence in the classroom or their innate fear of prime numbers.

Since 1919, Easter Seals has supplied families and individuals with disabilities across the country with the services and resources they need, from physical rehabilitation to job training. In 2003, the nationwide organization established its Walk With Me events, and since then, more than 150,000 people have participated in the annual fundraising effort. That push has helped generate more than $30 million in support of families at Easter Seals.
On September 27, the Easter Seals of Central California will host Fresno's leg of Walk With Me at Sierra Vista Mall. There, participants can join the nationwide effort by partaking in a two-mile fun walk or a 5K run. Either way, everyone in attendance can have some fun thanks to interactive activities, food, and a special show starring puppets who aren't yet jaded by Hollywood's glamor. Additionally, a community-wide resource fair will be on hand to promote local organizations and resources that serve special needs families and individuals.
The dedicated employees and volunteers at Community Food Bank work with 180 partner agencies—ranging from schools and community centers to places of faith—in an effort to combat the high level of food insecurity throughout Fresno, Madera, and Kings Counties. Operating out of a 50,000-square-foot distribution center, the team delivers more than 22 million pounds of food each year, including 12 million pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables, to clients in the community experiencing food hardship. The staff and volunteers also train their partner agencies on nutrition, food safety, and the effects of hunger to increase the impact of their work in the community. Every month, 160,000 clients get to enjoy nutritious meals thanks to programs such as Nutrition on Wheels, a mobile kitchen, and the BackPack Program, which provides weekend meals to children who may not have a stable source of food at home.
