Every summer, the Trans-Sierra Club takes four groups on a 75-mile trek, across their namesake mountain range to the highest altitude peak in the contiguous United States: Mount Whitney. The mountain measures 14,500 feet high, and while it has been summited by more than one fifth grader, don't be fooled. The route to the top is far from child's play. Participants must hike 8-12 miles a day and carry their own food and camping gear. However, the spectacular views?and the sense of accomplishment?that await at the summit are worth the sweaty journey.
The creators of the The Colorful 5K use the term ?run? very loosely. Less of a race, and more a celebration of the human spirit, The Colorful 5K encourages participants to dash, dance, prance, skip, cartwheel, or walk the course as they douse each other in vibrant hues that span the full spectrum. Each run also donates a portion of proceeds to a local charity, which range from Special Olympics affiliates and scholarship funds to city cleanup and beautification projects.
Coaches Jonathan and Rosanna Akers employ a varied mix of workouts modeled after functional, everyday movements to keep people of all fitness levels entertained and motivated. Without the distractions of mirrors, televisions, or televised mirrors, CrossFit Fresno utilizes simple, proven equipment, such as barbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, and pull-up bars. Classes last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour, and include a warm-up phase, skill/strength development, workout of the day, and a warm down. Sessions meet at designated times and must be scheduled by appointment. Incoming benders will begin their rubbery journey with four Foundations Program classes (a $100 value), which cover the basic movements and vocabulary of CrossFit, followed by four regular, drop-in CrossFit classes (a $50 value).
The instructors at Ultimate Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Fresno must pass through an entire college of martial arts training to be approved to teach. For every year as a full-time instructor, they also complete 40 hours of additional training?a process that helps them stay up-to-date with the latest self-defense and nutrition research. All of this training makes them the perfect candidates to guide children as young as 4 and adults as old as 64 through the center's intensive, progressive martial-arts programs. Classes cover physical and mental conditioning in styles such as children's karate, or muay thai kickboxing, Brazilian jujitsu, and mixed martial arts for teens, adults, and ninja turtles.
Though some participants choose to run and others to walk, everybody who participates in the Color Dash experiences a transformation. As participants make their way through the 5K Color Dash and UVSplash courses they are subjected to bursts of color; additional events include Zombies by Color Dash, which adds the undead to the equation. Though the color will wash away, the memories will remain forever in the minds of all participants who aren't goldfish. Proceeds from Color Dash events benefit local children's charities and organizations.
Licensed aesthetician Nehal sets up shop inside Leythas Day Spa & Salon. There, she warms wax and uses it to remove unwanted body hair or mold souvenir figurines for her clients to take home. A sugaring mix can also evict body hair while exfoliating the skin at the same time.
