Lieutenant General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson once stood on the first hole's green—or at least somewhere near it—and gave a rousing speech to motivate 17,000 Confederate troops before the First Battle of Winchester on May 25, 1862. Today, Jackson's Chase Golf Club hosts more peaceful pastures atop its rolling hills, with golf clubs replacing weapons and golf balls replacing the instant smoke-cloud spheres that Jackson would use during his renowned magic shows.
Set along the undulating countryside, the 18-hole course challenges golfers of all stripes to navigate a labyrinth of unforgiving holes, such as the 191-yard 11th hole, a par 3 with a pond stationed around the peninsula-like green. Rental carts whisk players up and down frequent elevation changes, saving caddies from giving piggyback rides across the 6,513-yard jaunt.

As the team behind Thousand Hills Riding Stables LLC, Yvonne Toone and her husband, Mark Toone, invite students to learn the art of horsemanship with assistance from their gentle steeds Nike, Gwen, and Lyric. Since her first ride at the age of 8, Yvonne has nursed a passion for equestrianism that drove her to become a licensed veterinary technician and earn her Certified Horsemanship Association certificate. She channels that passion to create a supportive, familial atmosphere where kids can learn horsemanship skills. She can even work with students as young as two in hope of developing the next generation of horse enthusiasts or merry-go-round operators.
Lasik surgery wields a laser to treat the surface below the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Having helped millions of eyeballs worldwide, Lasik helps to diminish or even terminate a patient's need for spectacles, contact lenses, and telescopes. Shenandoah Lasik & Cataract Center generates pulses using an excimer laser to meticulously correct miniscule magnitudes of corneal tissue. The excimer laser's ultraviolet light does not penetrate the eye or disturb its other parts, leaving the eyes haze-free and ready to take mental snapshots of the neighborhood hoodlums that like to urinate on lawn ornaments.
Prior to founding Serene Acres Riding Center, chief instructor Pamela Smith lived in Great Britain for 15 years, during which time she earned a place in the British Horse Society and the Association of British Riding Schools. It's only natural then that she offers English horseback riding lessons on the 40 acres of Virginia countryside where she now lives. She—along with deputy instructors Ann, Olivia, and Nelly—teaches group and private lessons that produce balanced and effective riders. Her method of accomplishing this involves emphasizing the proper foundations of riding—posture and balance—from the very beginning of training, as opposed to letting students get ahead of themselves by jumping over course obstacles or trotting across tile floors littered with ball bearings.
Elite Lab Testing's network of accredited medical reference labs and service centers helps patients take charge of their health and wellness with tests performed at more than 1,700 LabCorp locations across the country. These lab tests—which don't require referrals or doctor visits—cover a lot of ground. For example, with a single blood draw, medical professionals can check for the IgE antibodies that may be causing allergic reactions to insect stings, foods, pollen, mold, and younger siblings. They might spend the rest of the day screening blood-sugar levels, scanning hormone levels and thyroid health, checking for heart attack risks, and lifting the hood on the liver and kidneys. Customers can even order the same tests their health care provider does for routine physicals. Elite Lab Testing also performs drug screens, and offers affordable pricing packages and wellness programs that equip the health-conscious community with useful tools for constructing a healthy lifestyle.
The certified instructors at Vertical Girl Fitness elevate the art of exercise by guiding male and female participants through stretches and limb-fortifying poses middair. In yoga classes, hammocks suspend students 3 feet above the ground, asking gravity to apply gentle resistance to muscles and giving radio-controlled cars free rein of the floor. In addition to yoga-like poses, workouts feature elements of dance, Pilates, gymnastics, and calisthenics, and upside-down poses—also known as inversions—offer blissful moments of zero compression that may help stimulate the circulatory, endocrine, and digestive systems. As splenetic spines decompress, disks hydrate and realign, increasing flexibility and mobility.
