At Shapes Total Fitness for Women, the instructors strive to make working out as easy and fun as possible. That's why—in addition to providing access to free weights and cardio machines—they host more than 67 group training sessions per week, with options ranging from yoga to indoor cycling. That way, clients can get in shape using whatever means work best for them. Some of the eclectic classes have zero impact on joints, too—specifically the ones in the on-site pool. These include 45-minute water cardio classes and versatile aqua aerobics sessions, which are ideal for athletes with arthritis and other special needs. The most completely flexible workouts at the gym, however, are the personal training sessions. The one-on-one workouts are designed purely around the client's goals, whether she wants to lose weight or grow strong enough to carry her favorite dumbbell home with her.
When Yvette Bernosky applied for a part-time job at the Sarasota Bath and Racquet Fitness Club, she didn't realize she was taking the first steps toward what would become a 23-year professional career in the fitness industry. She began travelling internationally to participate in fitness programs and events and earned more than 14 fitness and wellness certifications—including qualifications as a personal trainer, fitness camp instructor, and nutritional counselor.Today, the fitness aficionado owns her own private, fully equipped training studio where she helped Miss Florida International get into sashaying shape. Her staff of qualified instructors lead group classes, including outdoor fitness camps and personal training sessions throughout the week. Amidst spinning cycles and whirring cardio machines, fitness-seekers of all ages bustle through boxing classes, TRX training, and total body conditioning classes. To spirit guests away from their stressors and diet-busting triggers, clients can commission personal trainers to accompany them on fitness retreats.
At Crossfit Sarasota, exercisers of all levels can find a CrossFit or CrossFit–inspired program to fit their fitness goals. The CrossFit workouts integrate kettlebell training, basic gymnastics, power lifting, plyometrics, and running, among other forms of exercise, to help patrons to increase their muscle mass and endurance while sculpting svelter physiques. The instructors adhere to the mantra that “routine is the enemy,” leading students in a different routine each class with the Work Out of the Day. The varied regimens keep muscles from getting too comfortable, rendering workouts ineffective, and also keep patrons motivated, versus running on the same old treadmill or running from the same old man-eating tiger every day. In addition to guiding guests through the high-intensity exercises, Crossfit Sarasota’s trainers administer nutritional advice and wellness information to extend health benefits beyond the studio.
Serendipity Health & Racquet Club is more than a gym. The word gym evokes a sterile room surrounded by mirrors, where the sounds of clanking weights and grunting weightlifters fill the air. Nestled in a gated community, Serendipity lives up to its soothing moniker with an elegant, airy facility on the edge of a placid lake. Inside, a spacious fitness club presents members with a full circuit of Cybex Eagle weight equipment, free weights, and cardio machines illuminated by natural light flooding in through wraparound windows. Outside, members can practice their serve on 19 Har-Tru tennis courts, or turn laps in the heated Junior Olympic–size pool.
The quote “Everything seems impossible … until it’s done!” adorns the walls of Apple Jelly Studios, inspiring the women within the private studio to achieve their fitness goals. Drawn together by a shared love of pole dancing, a quartet of women decided to spearhead the private studio, where they continue to teach dancing and fitness classes today alongside a handpicked crew of certified female instructors. Reflected in wall-to-wall mirrors, they teach students of all shapes and sizes to twirl around eight chrome poles during beginner, advanced, and intermediate pole-dancing and pole-trick classes, boosting confidence, toning muscles, and burning calories. Certified instructors also lead a variety of yoga, Pilates, and boot-camp classes upon the studio’s hardwood floors.
The studio rents its facilities out for private events, providing pole-dancing instruction, sultry red lighting, and a professional sound system for bachelorette parties, birthdays, and brazen knitting circles.
