Rather than focus on creating competition, the instructors at Iannuzzo's Karate & Kickboxing’s 8,000-square-foot facility take a more family-friendly route, eschewing enmity and keeping a positive frame of mind. This approach helps them train students as young as 4 years old in the art of karate. These all-ages classes focus on flexibility, coordination, and basic self-defense skills. Instructors also help adults obliterate calories and take out aggression against the punching bag that once spurned them in kickboxing classes set to up-tempo music. Instead of sparring, individuals undergo an ever-changing series of workouts with heavy bags, medicine balls, weights, and plyometrics. And the staff shows its theatrical side during children's birthday parties—giving martial-arts demonstrations, leading games, and slicing cakes using an authentic samurai sword.
The Wall's bouldering-only climbing facility beckons visitors to scale simulated peaks with angles of up to 90 degrees. Technicolor foot- and handholds pepper the walls, creating 62 different routes that challenge everyone from beginners to Harvard-educated mountain goats. To help to scale these manmade peaks, staff leads both introductory and intermediate bouldering classes. Additionally, the staff frequently changes routes to keep each climb fresh.
DMB Dance Productions owner-director Danae Bader has been a professional dancer since the age of 12. As a performer, she's appeared at Aloha Stadium for the 2003 Pro Bowl and on the stage of Fox's So You Think You Can Dance. As a teacher, she's directed an inner-city arts program and served as a judge and instructor for a major dance competition. Danae and her staff at DMB train dancers of all ages and abilities, whether they're just starting out or preparing to compete.
Dance Arts Studio ensconces students in a nurturing yet challenging environment; its instructors draw upon lifetimes of dance experience to impress spinning silhouettes with the expressive power of movement, line, and composition. One night a week for five consecutive weeks, students 12 years and older can gain a greater understanding of specific dance forms through physical training, mental preparation, and refrigerator poetry. Three styles of dance await ingénues and experts, from the abstract arabesques of a 60-minute modern-dance session to the hip-hop-anticipating syncopation of a 60-minute jazz-dance session. Seventy-five-minute Pilates/ballet combo classes cross-train muscles, sculpting cores capable of holding balance and sustaining pirouettes fast enough to reverse the Earth’s rotation.
Veteran fitness instructor and eminently certified Zumba coach Kat Bombard understands that sometimes, exercise is only as effective as it is entertaining. That’s why she and Dancing Kats’ tight-knit team of instructors lead pupils through Zumba’s core-boosting aerobic dance moves, which gain extra excitement thanks to the workout system’s signature infectious Latin rhythms and beats. In addition to sweating away excess calories and maintaining healthy hearts with Zumba dancing, students also build targeted muscle groups with body tone classes or work midsections into rippling washboards with express abs courses.
Located in central New York, just off New York State Thruway exit 40, midway between Rochester and Syracuse, sonorous moos and sloshing tins of milk once echoed across this idyllic nine-hole course, which James and Dee Ball converted from their family dairy farm in 1968. Since then, Meadowbrook Golf Club has seen a slew of proprietors, each of whom have added their own distinct touch by installing automatic watering, improving the drainage system, or building a 40’x80’ pole barn to house equipment and botched Dorf clones.
In May 2008, PGA golf professional Trey Walewski and his wife, Tina, took over the Meadowbrook. The golf club remains a family owned and operated business with Trey and Tina, and their daughters, Taylor and Sydney, taking on the operations of the course, practice facilities, pro shop, and bar and grill.
