When he was 7 years old, Mehrdad Valian ran into two school bullies and realized that he didn't know how to defend himself. That moment shaped the course of his life, inspiring him to train in Tehran and pushing him down a path of kung fu. In the four decades since, he has won first-place titles in martial-arts competitions across the world, tied on eighth-degree black belts in tae kwon do and kung fu, and transformed into Master Mehrdad Valian.
Fresh off wins in Iran and Russia, Master Valian settled in Texas and began his own tae kwon do studio in 1995, where trainees of all ages swear by a five-item oath. In the spacious facility, students of different ranks train together while observing the sport's tenets—including courtesy, integrity, and perseverance—and maintaining enough self-control to continue using doorknobs instead of kicking through every door they see.
To quote co-owner Christian Washington, Paramount Strength & Conditioning “pretty much trains you to excel in a man vs. orc battle from Lord of the Rings.” Christian began building Paramount’s strength-training philosophy while serving overseas in a Navy response team. Since then, he’s sharpened and refined his program with assistance from fellow trainers Kevin Becker and Stephanie Washington. Students learn the finer points of squats, deadlifts, and the snatch during classes that fuse competitive-style lifts with interval training and bare-knuckle tickle fights. With her keen understanding of what it’s like to be a woman in the weight room, co-owner Stephanie Washington created the gym’s signature Beauty By Barbell class, that relies on unique exercises and offers an approach geared towards ladies.
Going toe-to-toe in a ring with a veteran boxer sounds like a nightmare, but when it happens at TITLE Boxing Club, the veteran is a benevolent personal trainer. In sparring with their clients, trainers help chip away at personal weaknesses as part of custom fitness regimens.
Budding boxers can also train in a group setting, spending their class time pummeling heavy bags to perfect their jabs, crosses, and hooks. Group kickboxing classes, alternatively, combine punching-bag exercises with training on roundhouse kicks, front kicks, and back kicks guaranteed to enhance skittish horse impressions.
