Jan Wellendorf’s passion for karate began in 1963, when he first studied techniques from Japan, China, and Korea. Now a 10th-degree black belt, Jan has molded these experiences into his own style of karate—sanshinkai. At Karate International, more than 70 black belts teach Jan’s methods at five locations, where they help students use Eastern-inspired skills to control themselves mentally, physically, and spiritually. Geared toward pupils of all ages, Karate International’s programs also emphasize cross-training, which can incorporate everything from judo’s throwing techniques to the pizza-eating regimen of ninja turtles.

Nothing says victory like a sticky high-five full of ketchup and chili fries, and Buck’s Sports and Spirits provides plenty of quality napkins to go with its plates of gooey deliciousness. The upscale Brookhaven sports bar offers southern-style pub fare in a welcoming environment. Start with a tower of slow-cooked pork ribs ($9.95) in a sweet barbecue glaze, or opt for an order of the crab dip and pita chips ($9.95). A hearty selection of sandwiches, such as Buck's big beefy barn burger ($8.95) or the hand-full-o'-hen ($7.95), a char-broiled chicken sandwich, will satisfy hand-held carnivorous cravings. Uncle Bucky's almost-famous meatloaf with broccoli casserole ($12.95) or the wild snapper in a bag baked in parchment paper with crab meat, clams, and napa cabbage ($15.95) each satisfy homesick taste buds while serving as a distracting subject of small talk when the debate over the hunkiest state senators takes an awkward turn. If your vitamin-D deficiency has you down in the dumps, cheer up with a decadent dessert, such as the banana-pudding cheesecake ($4.95) or deep-fried favorites like golden, melty fried Reese's cups ($4.95) or Oreos ($4.95).

Q&A with Jessica Bottesch, Co-owner

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

We believe in teaching our clients how to do our exercise programs, as well as how their bodies work and how the exercises we are prescribing will help them achieve their fitness goals. We also combine a scientific approach with energetic instructors, upbeat music, and a community environment that keep our clients motivated.

What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?

When one woman first joined us, she couldn't look people in the eye and refused to work with a male trainer. Today, she is a new person: 60 pounds lighter, stronger, more confident, and completely comfortable with all our trainers. In her personal life, she also found the courage to make a major career change.

Do you run your gym according to a particular exercise philosophy?

At Empower, you will receive unparalleled personalized attention?even in our focused group classes?all while becoming a part of our supportive fitness community.

A forest of punching bags dangles from the rafters at Box-2B-Fit Boxing Clubs, where athletes throw jabs and hooks as instructors motivate them to push to their limits during each workout. Modeled after boxing training, the workouts at Box-2B-Fit supplement floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee with strength training and kettlebell drills to light the path toward slimmer and stronger physiques. Patrons of all ages and fitness levels are welcome, and the goal of the fast-paced workouts is not to train championship fighters, but to inspire fit-seekers to whip into peak physical condition.

Like the plot of Rocky, Box-2B-Fit revolves around boxing, but has something for everybody. The trainers also lead fitness classes in TRX suspension training and kettlebell training, in addition to high-intensity indoor and outdoor boot camps and indoor rowing.

It's hard to become bored during a class at G.I. GYM Bootcamp & Cross Training. That's because its energetic trainers are constantly switching their workouts up, infusing boot-camp-style exercises with rounds of boxing, intervals of weightlifting, and bursts of cardio. Amid bright-green walls and matted floors, the highly trained and certified coaches lead classes in a variety of focuses, including abdominal work, kettlebell exercises, and MMA training. Trainers take advantage of the studio's abundance of functional equipment, supplementing exercises with heavyweight punching bags, massive tractor tires, and sledgehammers. The team also includes a staff nutritionist, who assists students in crafting customized diet plans based on their needs, goals, and favorite flavor of Kool-Aid.
