At RushHour Karting, speed demons can kart to their spleens' content, regardless of the weather, on a challenging all-indoor track. The 1/3-mile course fills up drivers' adrenaline tanks with hairpin curves, winding turns, and high-speed straights. New SODI RX7 karts with 6.5-horsepower engines and improved safety features reach race speeds of up to 40 mph for an adult-sized dose of acceleration exhilaration for drivers 15 and up, while junior karts provide more manageable speeds for drivers 8 to 14 years old. Today's deal gets each driver onto the track for two eight-minute heats, providing an ample cure for the toe tingles that come with lead foot.
Amber Turner-Weeks has been dancing since the tender age of 3. A passion for movement led her to explore many facets of dance such as its history, improvisation skills, and child development. After graduating with a dance degree and a concentration in private studio teaching, Turner-Weeks traveled with the Meredith Dance Theatre and toured with the North Carolina Dance Festival. As the owner and artistic director of DanceArt, she now has the opportunity to transform her positive childhood memories into memorable dance experiences for students of all levels, ranging from toddlers to adults.As the mother of a young daughter, Turner-Weeks aims to create a noncompetitive environment where children feel safe and have room to explore their talents. She tells students, "Whatever experience and path you take in life, dream big and always make the most of what life has to offer you.” A team of caring instructors encourages parent interaction, teaching kids self-discipline and confidence in a variety of classes and at annual recitals and other events. The family-oriented facility boasts four spacious studio rooms with disco balls and shock-absorbing sprung floors, cheerful turquoise and purple couches, and a two-way-mirrored area where parents can observe youngsters in action without distracting them with proud victory dances.
Jan Wellendorf’s passion for karate began in 1963, when he first studied techniques from Japan, China, and Korea. Now a 10th-degree black belt, Jan has molded these experiences into his own style of karate—sanshinkai. At Karate International, more than 70 black belts teach Jan’s methods at five locations, where they help students use Eastern-inspired skills to control themselves mentally, physically, and spiritually. Geared toward pupils of all ages, Karate International’s programs also emphasize cross-training, which can incorporate everything from judo’s throwing techniques to the pizza-eating regimen of ninja turtles.
From the very first tee shot over a lake to the pond protecting the left side of the 18th green, the course at River Ridge Golf Club pits players against the physical and psychological challenges brought by omnipresent water hazards, including the Neuse River that intersects the course on several holes.
Architect Chuck Smith’s 1997 design weaves course play through a 6,740-yard gauntlet furnished with a plush carpet of bermuda-grass fairways and rough that gives way to fast-moving G-6 bent-grass greens. The course's signature 5th hole rewards golfers who keep their tee shots on the fairway with a short-iron approach that must clear a large pond and any caddies sunbathing in the large greenside bunker.
As a semiprivate club, membership at River Ridge unlocks a slew of benefits not available to the general public. Though the practice area—composed of a driving range and putting and chipping greens—is open to everyone, only members may make use of the locker rooms, club storage, and handicap program provided at the clubhouse.
