When Debra Sternberg first caught sight of Tom Koerner at the Doc Scantlin dance in 1987, she was smitten by his enthusiastic jitterbug. Though the duo's subsequent amorous relationship lasted only a year, their swing-dance partnership has lasted for decades. Together, they have jitterbugged and lindy hopped into the top spots in contests that include the 1994 UK Lindy Hop Championships, the 1998 Virginia State Open, and the 2010 National Living Legends of Swing Award.
Today, Tom and Debra pass on their expertise and passion at Gottaswing, their dance school that has expanded into eight locations throughout the United States. Each week, more than 500 students lay the six- and eight-count foundations for the jitterbug and lindy hop. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes meet six nights a week at various studios and dance clubs throughout the DC area, each equipped with a dance floor where students and a woman who looks suspiciously like Amelia Earhart can let loose . Four nights a week, the school invites students to join fellow classmates at events to dance along with DJ-curated tunes and live music.
Golf balls whistle through the air as they take flight over the driving range at Waters Landing Golf Park, an 18-acre practice facility where golfers of all stripes flock to groom their game. But while the range’s mix of grass and artificial tees—as well as its 15 covered and heated hitting stalls—offer ample space for solitary practice or black-market driver exchanges, the heart and soul of Waters Landing Golf Park is its golf instruction curriculum.
Helmed by PGA Director of Instruction John Hafera, lessons and clinics take a modern and holistic approach to golf improvement. Using Titleist Performance Institute’s techniques for measuring golf fitness and the latest technological teaching aids—including K-Vest 3-D motion-capture analysis and V1 video-swing analysis—John and his staff assess golfers’ skill sets using the "six factors of golf": swing technique, equipment, mental game, physical assessment, course management, and special knowledge. By making strides in each of these six golf facets, golfers can scratch bogeys off of their scorecards and overcome their fear of being swallowed whole by a sand trap.
Montgomery Village Golf Club's Edmund Ault–designed course sprawls across 6,726 yards of emerald corridors cleaved through the arboreal heart of Montgomery County. Fresh off recent refurbishments that include new tee boxes and switching to a bermuda hybrid grass, management continues to improve on a course that has hosted multiple PGA-sanctioned events and royal grass-grazing parties for traveling goat monarchs. Fairways tunnel through unforgiving tree lines as golfers swing their way toward each green, where fast surfaces form breaking putts. Alongside the pristine par 71, the club's grass-tee driving range, putting green, and full-service pro shop help streamline clubbers' birdie-hunting skills, and the Willow Tree Inn's restaurant and grill keeps players from dining on freshly torn divots with an all-day menu of entrees and drinks.

Within Yamasaki Academy, seasoned martial artists engage students in a way tailored to their particular athletic capacity. To do this, they follow a vigorous signature exercise program that incorporates technique, sparring, competition training, and overall conditioning. Whether choosing Brazilian jiu-jitsu, muay thai, judo, strength and conditioning, boxing, or mixed martial arts, classes are available for pupils of all ages, genders, and fitness levels.
Since 1973, each of Sport&Health's clubs has aimed for full fitness coverage with programs for every taste and family member. Guests can spark positive lifestyle changes with workouts and wellness services, or engage in a variety of sports. Each facility houses different athletic amenities for games and laps, from pristine swimming pools to squash and racquetball courts. The camaraderie of group classes such as Zumba and Les Mills BodyPump barbell routines complement scores of club equipment meant for exercising solo—or with the guidance of a certified personal trainer. The clubs also emphasize kid-friendly activities with arts and crafts, Kidz Klub childcare, and youth certification courses that teach teens the ins and outs of training. The instructors at Halo Dance Studio encourage shakers of all ages and abilities to embrace movement as a way to nurture the mind, the body, and the spirit. With a packed schedule that offers classes six days a week, students can explore a variety of different dance styles. Energetic hip-hop classes feature fresh-from-the-street beats, and a beginners tap-and-jazz hybrid class sees tappers testing their skills on the floor or on the small cloud floating in the middle of the studio. Master the grooves of other cultures in a spicy Latin-fusion session or an abdominal-bending belly-dance class. Ballet is offered in three twinkle-toed levels—pre ballet, level one, and level two. Classes are available on a drop-in basis, so students are free to visit the dance floor when the urge to pop, lock, or plié hits them like an anvil wearing Hammer pants.
The instructors at US Martial Arts and Fitness combine traditional martial arts with exercises designed to burn calories and build muscle. The resulting workouts teach students the principles of self-defense while making them strong enough to deadlift their terrified attackers. Young martial artists begin their training in kids' karate classes that instill discipline and self-confidence, while adult students participate in MMA classes that delve into the grappling techniques of kickboxing and jiu-jitsu. Some classes, such as Xtreme Kickboxing Fitness, use martial arts as a jumping-off point for workouts that focus more heavily on fitness.
