Inside both of JJ Jump's two locations lies 7,000 to 12,000 square feet of inflatable challenges and bounce-based entertainment for children. The jousting arena settles sibling rivalries in a civilized and laugh-filled fashion, and giant slides send little ones safely toward the ground. But there's more to JJ Jump than jumping: each facility also boasts a creative play zone that is ripe with construction toys and a stage where children can let their imaginations run wild.
From time to time, the Clackamas facility morphs into JJ Extreme, where a kid wearing a harness can be suspended from the ceiling by a rope to swing back and forth under neon lights. Harnesses also come in handy for a slightly more competitive activity, during which youngsters zip past one another, running toward a basketball hoop and hoping to make a shot before a bungee cord pulls them each backward across a soft, inflatable mat.
For 25 years, the chefs and party planners at A Matter of Taste have been decorating and catering everything from major events to intimate gatherings. Founder Vanessa Juryla has put her skills to use at weddings and private dinners in New York and Los Angeles, and today she and her staff focus on the Portland area. There, they sauté Maryland soft-shell crab, grill mangos and pair them with rum-glazed plantains, and prepare cakes in flavors such as coconut pineapple and vanilla buttermilk.
After spending time in Quaking Grass's furnished loft studio, you learn why some of the yoga, Zumba, and holistic-dance instructors refer to the space as their "big living room." Once inside the studio, you find yourself in a sprawling, high-ceilinged loft. Natural light spills in from tall windows and onto green walls, where African art and decorative Asian fans hang. Scanning the room, you see plush furniture, a kitchenette, and a massive Native American dream catcher, painted white and hanging 6 feet to the floor.
Quaking Grass is home to the Healing Arts Collective; many of its members left positions as businesspeople, teachers, and lawyers in favor of a more relaxed lifestyle. According to director Heather Straube, they each felt called to help others through techniques such as massage, yoga, and dance. Instructors lead students through progressive poses in Vinyasa yoga, dances set to Latin and Caribbean beats in Zumba, and blends of meditative martial arts and freeform movement in Earthquake Ecstatic and Nia dance. Though they guide some classes step-by-step, instructors emphasize free exploration over adhering to a strict routine—reminding students that they can meditate silently, pair off with partners, or dance alone to practice leading and following at the same time.
Once each month, Quaking Grass's members also host an open community clinic, experimental salon, and potluck. Practitioners stationed throughout the space introduce curious guests to basics of tarot-card reading, massage, hypnosis, quantum touch, and a host of other holistic methods—with the hope that visitors, like babies balancing their first checkbooks, experience something new. Individual members, artists, or community practitioners may also lead workshops or lectures explaining their craft.

At Inflatable Kingdom, kids can explore a whimsical empire built with color, imagination, and lots and lots of air. Inside the sprawling facility, children can bounce on towering castles, then careen down cushy slides. Inflatable Kingdom opens its world to the public during open-play sessions and birthday parties, which can be tailored to a special theme, including pirates, carnival, westerns, and obscure Secretaries of State. And Inflatable Kingdom also uses its shape-shifting space to host dances, weddings, teambuilding events, and other adult-related functions, which can be customized to your specifications.
Don’t be surprised by the yoga equipment hanging from the ceiling. At Shakti House, the dangling silk slings are used in aerial yoga classes, which are designed to boost blood flow and decompress spines. Aerial yoga practitioners wrap around their legs around the soft slings to perform graceful inversions, and slip their arms through them for added support during challenging poses. However, aerial yoga is just one of the more than 25 yoga styles practiced at Shakti House.
The veteran team of instructors also leads ground-bound classes in yin, hatha, ashtanga, and kundalini yoga styles, helping yogis of all levels beat stress and build strength and flexibility. Their Pilates mat classes, meanwhile, build core strength more effectively and than a 24-hour tickle fight. In total, they lead more than 30 classes per week, but visitors don’t have to workout every time they stop by the studio—they can also browse an on-site boutique stocked with Lucy activewear, handmade jewelry, and rotating art displays.
