As they enter the training circle at Curves, female guests come face-to-face with the smiles of other women. And just as points on a circle share a common distance from the circle's center, workout participants share the experiences of those nearby by trading stations throughout the 30-minute training session. One minute is spent on a piece of strength-training equipment built for feminine frames and designed to work two opposing muscle groups with a single movement. Exercisers then move on to a recovery station, where they run, jog, or dance to maintain heart rates and keep platforms in place during momentary losses of gravity.
The workouts at Drenched Boot Camp get the blood pumping, the muscles working, and the fat burning in less than an hour. Each 45-minute high-intensity session is created and guided by Julie Arts, a National Academy of Sports Medicine–certified personal trainer and certified TRX suspension trainer who has the motivational prowess to power students of all skill levels through a challenging yet rewarding class. Her sessions at JJ Jump begin with a jump in the bounce house to get students' bodies warmed up, stretch out muscles, and wiggle into tight workout shorts. Julie then leads her charges through 25–30 minutes of obstacle-course races, squats, pushups, and burpees. The trainer happily modifies the workouts to make sure beginners and injured students are comfortable. After a five-minute cool-down session, students can strut out of class with a new sense of confidence and a souvenir jar of their own sweat. In addition to helping individuals reach their health goals, Julie has spent four seasons with Team in Training in order to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
CrossFit's series of functional movement exercises can be scaled to the abilities of everyone, from grandparents to athletes, making it one of the most democratic fitness methods in the world. IM=X (Integrated Movement Xercize) fuses the muscle-toning techniques of Pilates with resistance and plyometric jumps for a more athletically geared workout. Limbs will be lengthened during two private reformer sessions, in which a certified instructor familiarizes clients with the reformer equipment, bending physiques to reach their individual fitness goals with ample personal attention.

We provide personal guidance for your goals, including nutrition, scaling, and exercise modification. But the real secret to your success is our community of supportive students and mentors. We foster a welcoming, family-like atmosphere, infused with humor, challenge and encouragement. Our gym is a place you'll look forward to, and that will empower you with the motivation to succeed.
What is the biggest mistake you see people make when trying to get fit on their own?
The biggest mistake I see people make is searching for short-cuts, gimmicks or easy results. Of course fitness can be simple, but simple isn't necessarily easy. I see too many people go from one method to the next without allowing proper time for success. Find what works for you, and make small adjustments from there. Consistency is the key.
What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?
We constantly vary our workouts so you'll never get bored and you'll be less likely to plateau or over-train. So every session looks a little different. However, some consistent features of our sessions include a general warm-up followed by guided mobility and stretching. Then we move on to a coached skills learning session and a workout of the day (WOD) with strength training and metabolic conditioning. Sessions conclude with a cool-down and mobility, along with goal-tracking and social time.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
As we enter our 10th year of training, we were originally one of only a few Portland area CrossFit gyms, back before most people had ever heard of CrossFit. We are also expanding our accessibility to become Portland's first and only 24-hour CrossFit gym. Our veteran coaches boast decades of combined training experience, to provide each individual the guidance they need to be safe, confident and successful, regardless of injuries or current fitness level. As of this spring, our new location is housed within a 60,000-square-foot warehouse, yet we maintain hands-on and community driven classes by capping most of them at only 12 students. We also offer more than just CrossFit. We have workshops devoted to boxing, strongman techniques, yoga, and endurance. Students may take advantage of open-gym time outside of class, as well as personal training sessions.
