When faced with lemons—or many other fruits—the proprietors of Oh, Olive! don't contemplate lemonade. Instead, they envision freshly pressed batches of extra-virgin olive oil, such as their tangy Eureka-lemon variant. The family-run shops specialize in this flexible condiment and stock their shelves with estate-produced Delizia oils. Their catalog covers both plain and fused types with flavors that range from the spicy notes of chipotle peppers to the sweetness of blood oranges, a fitting complement to cuts of chicken and fish. They also vend balsamic vinegars from Modena, Italy. Fruits feature heavily in the imported collection, which includes pomegranate, blackberry-ginger, and cinnamon-pear vinegars in addition to a dark-chocolate infusion and the 18-year balsamic—a traditional vinegar aged in oak barrels and given a high-school diploma. Often, the staff members don't separate the acts of purchasing and cooking with their wares. They prefer to interact with customers and host tastings, classes, and contests to encourage innovative recipes. Amid more than 60 kinds of oil and vinegar, Oh, Olive! sells meal add-ons as well. Tiesta Tea produces soothing, toasty brews, and stuffed olives contain hidden servings of jalapeños, sharp cheddar, and asparagus.

WineStyles’ inspiration for its wine-tasting parties began, of all places, at a backyard barbecue. Some friends at the barbecue found themselves with too many bottles of wine. As an experiment, they decided to taste the wines blindly, so as not to be influenced by price or packaging. This impromptu tasting became the template for WineStyles, a boutique designed to help you choose a wine simply by taste. That is, wines here aren’t categorized by varietal or region, but instead by one of eight taste profiles: crisp, silky, rich, and bubbly for whites; fruity, mellow, bold, and nectar for reds. However, patrons interested in knowing more about their selected bottle can still do so—each bottle comes with a description of its characteristics and suggested food pairings. Those looking to learn even more about wines can attend one of WineStyles’ weekly tastings or discovery classes. During these events, certified specialists explore everything from the history of different varietals to current trends in wine drinking, such as which wine goes best with texting. Different levels of wine-club membership give participants two to three bottles a month (each selected by a Masters Wine Panel), invitations to private tastings, and discounts toward additional purchases.

The success of The Daymaker Salon relies on two distinct principles: design savvy and a commitment to personal attention. The first component walks into the salon every day inside the head of stylist Edmond Selfollari, who spent years training under industry heavyweights Elizabeth Arden and Mario Tricoci. His stylists bolster his keen aesthetic eye with their own, which they continuously hone with ongoing training and education, a dedication to perfection that earned them the honor of acting as stylists for makeover features on The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Jenny Jones Show. In service of the second component—commitment to personal attention—every haircare service begins with a complimentary consultation. Stylists chat with clients and listen to their fashion goals and wishes. By the time the scissors come out, stylists know what their clients want and how to use their vast cosmetic knowledge in service of those expectations. The stylists can help their clients to change up their hairstyle or find solutions to color problems such as natural hair tones that wash out the complexion or match a rival debate team's jersey colors.

The Burhop family keeps their fish markets stocked with just-caught, never-frozen goods. They do this by going right to the source?wholesale distributors in Alaska, Hawaii, New England, and as far away as Australia. Their connections with these distributors stretch over the course of Burhop's 88-year history, which started when Albert "Pops" Burhop founded a wholesale-seafood business in downtown Chicago. When locals started offering him money and moon rocks in exchange for the prized cuts of fish, Pops decided to cut out the middleman. Today, they proudly report that many of their loyal customers are transplants from the East and West Coasts, where fresh seafood is easier to come by. Ironically, Burhop's gets fresher stuff than many stores on the coasts do, thanks to Chicago's central location, which enables quick shipping from all of America's shores. In the shop, customers can watch as the filleters skillfully ply their craft. Get to know your Burhop?s fish mongers! A series of online video tutorialss teach home chefs to prep mouthwatering lobster tails, soft shell crabs, tuna burgers, and more.

In 1930, Dr. Joseph Rosin and his brother, Maurice, opened a small shop on Cermak Road in Cicero. In 80 years, the shop has grown from a small family-run optometrist's office to a regionally renowned business that has sharpened the eyesight of celebrities such as Joe DiMaggio and Plácido Domingo and left its mark on the Chicago area by designing famous symbols such as Harry Caray's trademark glasses and the novelty shades that adorn the John Hancock Center. Today, Rosin Eyecare rests in the hands of the third generation of Rosins, ably helmed by brothers James and Jonathan, who continue a proud tradition of warm, personal service as they improve eyesight with high-tech LASIK and PRK treatments as well as stylish eyeglasses with scratch-resistant lenses. At 16 locations, including the newest office Long Grove, a staff of optometrists keeps optical orbs in high function with comprehensive exams, treating each patient's individual needs with products such as a contact-lens implant or a prescription safety eyewear.
