Shaun Froshour's decade of canine search and rescue experience made him the go-to guy when dogs needed training. Friends and clients swarmed him with requests to work on their canines' behavior problems or watch their dogs overnight. Eventually, Shaun realized he could parlay his expertise and passion for pooches into a business and decided to open the Canine Retreat and Behavior Improvement Center. In keeping with the owners’ environmentally friendly philosophy, store items such as food and litter delivery are delivered to customers throughout the city via bicycle.
When a shop on Ocean Grove's Main Street became available in 2011, fourth-generation resident Cindy Stiles seized the chance to combine her business savvy with her love for animals. She opened Ocean Grove Pet Boutique, which welcomes pet owners and four-legged friends as long as they're vaccinated and leashed. Stiles also enlisted the help of a baker to help make their own all-natural cookies and frozen yogurt. A baker might seem like a misfit at a pet store, but these goodies aren't for the humans. Aside from the doggie deserts, the boutique also draws in customers with its pet collars, shampoos, and other products made with natural ingredients. Staying eco-friendly is as important to Stiles as being pet-friendly, and as such, there are no plastic bags to be found in the store. Instead, she offers shopping bags made from recycled materials, and when customers bring them in, they receive 50 cents off future purchases and a silent thank-you from every tree they walk past.
The echoes of contented barks reverberate across The Mutt Hutt’s 9,200-square-foot facility, where canines of all breeds sleep, nosh, and frolic in a safe and controlled environment. Daycare sessions include free and structured playtimes and multiple daily walks, allowing dogs to stretch their muscles and blow off steam. A midday rest between those activities gives them time to reenergize as they dream about playing catch in open meadows or chasing down cats with slender tails of beef jerky. The facility’s boarded residents follow a similar schedule, with the added perk of daily breakfast and dinner.
The Mutt Hutt’s staff also makes house calls, dropping by residences to keep an eye on pets. When they aren’t changing litter boxes or playing with lonely kittens, staffers clean messes off lawns so garden gnomes no longer have to hold their noses in disgust.

Owners Dr. Laura Weis and Dr. Randy Weis, both veterinarians, live on site and spearhead the resort’s mission to keep pets healthy and happy through high levels of interaction and physical activity. Dogs staying at Holiday House enjoy taking part in nature walks, playtime, massages, and grooming, whereas cats on vacation enjoy private condos outfitted with areas for climbing, sleeping, and pondering string theory.
