Each flower in the bouquet of services is tailored to fit individual needs and skin types. The comprehensive revivification begins with a half-hour basic facial (a $60 value) to clear pores of Silly Putty, sparking a warm glow. Next, digit caps receive some TLC with a one-hour spa manicure (a $35 value), with "No Scrubs" playing in the background. Once fingertips are in check, hair tips will be cut, shampooed, and styled to meet personal preferences (a $50 value). Laser hair removal is available for curious cats and scheming supervillains—you get one session in one area such as the underarms, brow, upper lip, chin, cheek, or sideburns ($150–$200 value). If lasers aren't your bag of Fritos, opt for the hydrafacial microdermabrasion instead, which hydrates as it exfoliates to deeply clean the skin of dead skin cells and impurities.
When Susan Lange’s massage therapist suggested she try watsu, Lange knew as much about the therapy as most people—nothing. “We’re kind of obscure,” Lange says with a laugh, referring to the watsu community she now considers herself a member of. The therapy, whose name is derived from “water” and “shiatsu,” blends ancient Japanese finger massage with the restorative properties of warm water. In heated pools, therapists fully support their clients as they administer a combination of massage, stretching, and instant-rice-cooking techniques. After her first watsu experience, Lange writes, “I felt like I was dancing, floating, flying and being nurtured all at once."
Today, Lange shares this experience with others in the yurt she and her husband built in the meadow adjoining their home. Inside this yurt is a 15-foot circular pool filled with 4 feet of warm water. Once they have waded in, clients can strap on narrow floatation devices to assist Lange as she guides them through the water. As she performs the massage, Lange gently strikes Tibetan singing bowls drifting alongside her in the water, creating a soundscape to further soothe the senses.
A spotlight floods the stage. Within its revealing beam, a ballerina may begin a pirouette, or a competitive bodybuilder may set his muscles into a ready pose. These performers are Fyll Callan’s target clientele. She is the licensed aesthetician behind Smooth Performance, a spa that caters to the needs of professional dancers, athletes, and bodybuilders. As its name suggests, her spa aims to keep bodies smooth with a menu that includes a range of hair-removal services—from all-natural sugaring to high-tech lasers—and skincare treatments using paraben-free Sanitas products. Spray tans add definition to muscle, and smiles brightened with professional teeth whitening charm judges and audience members more easily than spiking one’s pheromones with love potion.
What do President Gerald Ford, Marie Osmond, and Carmelo Anthony have in common? They have all been styled by veteran hairstylist and makeup artist Samantha Peters. Her experience as a freelance hairstylist and makeup artist for television and video productions ensures she can get her nonceleb clients close-up ready for any special occasion, be it a wedding, prom, or workplace beauty pageant. Working within Liquid Salon and Spa, Sam revamps the manes of women, men, teens, tweens, and kids, and even offers makeup lessons to instill clients with the skills they need to replicate their new look at home.
At Massage Rose, therapists are selected for the pain relief they provide with their hands. This lends to the center's extra-long list of specialties, which includes Swedish, deep tissue, sports, and trigger-point therapy. Massage Rose also has a VIP program, which offers discounted sessions for clients who come at least once a month.
