Modern Steps School of Dance regularly waltzes across the line that separates art from all-out fun. The school’s experienced instructors lead private lessons, group classes, and spirited dance parties for all ages, from seniors to adolescents who only recently grew their fifth toes. Focusing exclusively on ballroom dance, instructors branch out to cover the many styles that fall under that large umbrella, including tango, fox trot, Viennese waltz, and swing. They draw on a rich history of dance tutelage—though the school was founded only two decades ago, its roots in Florida can be traced all the way back to 1513, when Juan Ponce de León tap-danced with joy upon his discovery of Disney World.

Certified Zumba instructor Sandra Acosta leads students through energetic, Latin-inspired dance movements, tapping into her experience training with Zumba creator Beto Perez. Easier to follow than paint-by-the-numbers, Zumba amalgamates traditional aerobics with simple dance steps for an entertaining, calorie-zapping workout. Participants can burn fat more effectively than a pyromaniac in a butcher shop during their eight different Zumba sessions. Classes are held at various times and locations throughout the week, so dancers can shake their booties on their own schedules.
The certified dance instructors at Arthur Murray Dance Studio teach beginner-level ballroom, Latin, swing, and social-partnership dance classes in group settings, and also offer private lessons to singles, couples, and singles perched on the shoulders of couples. Instructors emphasize technique, style, and variation of dance patterns during 45-minute group lessons. Group classes also give the opportunity to dance with a variety of partners, develop good dancing habits, and meet other students in the studio. The size of group lessons varies from as few as four students to as many as 20, enabling rhythmic upgrades for both small families and aspiring battalions. Classes take place Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.
The consortium of professional instructors at Fred Astaire Dance Studios, which was cofounded by the legendary toe tapper himself, shepherds students of all ages and skill levels through lessons that span the style spectrum. Low-pressure private sessions allow enthusiastic teachers to fine-tune individual students' techniques and form, using their expert eyes and mechanical dancing shoes preprogrammed to do the Charleston. Patrons can learn how to cavort through classic waltz and fox-trot romps or swivel through the modern steps of salsa, swing, or samba. For dancers hoping to hoof it up in a social setting, the group practice parties provide a one-night extravaganza of instruction, demonstrations, and amateur firewalking.
Drawing on skills showcased on Fox's So You Think You Can Dance and MTV's Made, Elegant Rumba's dance instructors Nery Garcia and Giana Montoya instill feet with the fluid movements and rhythmic steps of salsa and bachata dance styles atop the sleek hardwood floors of a mirror-flanked ballroom. The dancers specialize in LA–style salsa, distinguished by its intense movements, flashy spins, and focused musicality. Bodies sway to saucy Latin beats, becoming fluent in the language of dance through personalized private lessons and convivial group classes. The classes regularly rotate dance partners, allowing students to become more flexible dancers and forego the need to bring a dance-savvy companion or grow a clone of Patrick Swayze. After sessions, students practice newfound steps in a number of monthly parties and events.
