Integrative Medicine Center's Drs. A. Hanna and Lidia Okonski welcome clients in for a combination of spa services and holistic medicine. Dr. A. Hanna is board certified by NCCAOM in acupuncture and oriental medicine, and Dr. Lidia Okonski, who does not perform acupuncture treatments, is a board-certified psychiatrist. Focused on improving personal well-being and health, they center the center's holistic-medicine approach on acupuncture, homeopathy, and nutritional medicine, such as corrective diets focused on vitamins and not eating grapes realistically painted onto drywall. Their spa services, meanwhile, emphasize the external—the menu includes body wraps, facials, waxing, and aromatherapy.
At the Art Institute of Weston, master artist Conchita Firgau and her associate professors lead students of all ages in learning the classic style of European painting. Drawing on traditions of color, light, and composition practiced by Renaissance painters, Conchita and her staff give students the confidence and skill to develop their own style. But painting is not the only activity that goes on here. Photography classes help shutterbugs master digital cameras, and guitar classes use fun, easily digestible techniques to give more credibility to students’ air-guitar performances. The friendly studio also hosts after-school programs and camps to hone kids’ artistic talents.
A former professor with degrees from Tufts, Harvard, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mike ElDeiry has dedicated himself to helping the next generation get into the best colleges to pursue their dreams. Focusing on the SAT and ACT admission exams, he founded Broward Tutorial Services, Inc. to help pupils learn the tricks and techniques that can help them ace the tests. In lessons, students learn such essential techniques as time management, process of elimination, and avoiding common traps laid by the exam writers or the pirates using the testing facility as a base. Under ElDeiry's tutelage, students have made marked improvements in their scores, with boosts of more than 300 points on the SAT.
There are plenty of ways to learn?reading a book, listening to an audio tape, or watching an instructional video, to name a few. Effective as those methods are for some, for others, they are too impersonal. That's where Face to Face Cooking Club comes in. Here, teachers lead enriching cooking classes, sharing with budding chefs the skills needed to cook the cuisine of many international cultures. The club also offers intensive Spanish programs that cover all four language-related skills?writing, speaking, reading, and listening?but focus especially on speaking, which enables students to communicate quickly instead of etching hieroglyphics into the wall.
Facebook is a platform for personal profiles, but at Doral Chamber of Commerce, the team views it as a platform for something else entirely: marketing potential. Dedicated to boosting area business’s profiles—especially via web tools—the center hosts a wide variety of educational programs. Their course on social media, for example, helps business owners keenly navigate Facebook, along with sites such as Twitter and YouTube. Other courses touch on topics such as book marketing and public speaking, an art that requires poise and pyro techniques.
