In 1976, educator, musician, and kinesiologist Robin Wes longed for a children's gym that prioritized personal growth over competition. Unveiled at a time when physical-education classes pushed students to focus almost exclusively on winning, Robin's program was swiftly adopted and is now used in more than 300 Little Gyms worldwide. Robin still pens original music to accompany lessons, which engage whippersnappers 4 months old–12 years old with gymnastics, dance, karate, and parent and child activities.
Each of The Little Gym's classes introduces simple movements that sharpen motor skills and set brains whirring, allowing kids to progress at their own pace until they can finally build a computer out of macaroni and glitter. Staff members strive to build a base for lifelong social skills and self-assurance with each exercise, including activities rooted purely in fun, such as summer camps or birthday parties, which helped The Little Gym to earn title of #1 Birthday Chain in Parents Magazine.
Knockout Fitness's instructors lead one-hour, kickboxing-inspired workout routines. They keep classes small, guiding students first through warm-ups and then stretching routines. Then, they hit the bags, quite literally. Each student squares off against a 150-pound heavy bag or an instructor holding pads, practicing fast-paced striking sequences that help build speed, strength, and endurance. Teachers incorporate ab exercises along the way and lead a cool down that's just as important as the warm-up.
Though fitness classes comprise a lot of what they do, the trainers also teach martial arts classes. In addition to boxing and kickboxing sessions, they lead jiu-jitsu training and MMA classes, where athletes mix all their skills together in one match. Every class focuses on developing technique and endurance, and many guests choose to supplement their training with the gym's weight-lifting focused programs, especially if they plan on fighting a barbell.
The experienced instructors at YogaEvolved, a yoga studio inside the Lavendar Moon Store & Holistic Center, want to help their students unite body, mind, and spirit through holistic yoga classes. Class sizes are limited at this intimate studio, meaning each student gets more personal attention. Yogis at every level, from beginner to advanced practitioners, are encouraged to attend classes that include restorative, basic, flow, and prenatal yoga. After class, students can browse the Lavendar Moon Store & Holistic Center, where they'll find supplements, aromatherapy oils, jewelry, and crystals that aim to help improve customers' energy in daily life.
Sonny Gutierrez has been in the boxing ring for more than 30 years. In that time, he's amassed six national titles, competed in nearly every amateur tournament, and fought on the USA Boxing team. Perhaps his crowning achievement, however, is helping transform people's lives at Sonny's Boxing Gym. Here, he and fellow instructors teach trainees how to throw punches and how to respond to a punching bag's witty insults. Classes include different levels of boxing, personal training, and a kids' antibullying program.
From across three offices, Suncoast Dental's team of dentists and technicians boosts smiles' wattage with general, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry. The pros regularly attend lectures and conventions to keep their techniques up to date, honing the skills that comprise their prevention-based approach to oral care. Their focus on patient education and communication begets informed patients and may effectively mediate arguments between molars when floss comes between them.
The dental team at Waddell Family Dentistry made a list of reasons patients fear the dentist and then designed a practice expressly to cross out each one. It replaced metal drills with Waterlase hand pieces, which reduce the heat and vibration caused from metal rubbing against teeth. Before each procedure, team members educate their patients on what to expect, fielding any questions and arming them with detailed aftercare instructions. For patients who feel especially nervous, they administer a variety of oral and IV sedations and measure the half-life of each in accordance to the length of procedures in order to minimize posttreatment grogginess.
