LEC aims to fund scholarships for four low-income elementary- and middle-school students to attend the three-day educational retreat with their classmates. Student scholarships include transportation to and from the center, room and board, and an educational program tailored to individual class size and grade level with team-building exercises, outdoor exploration, and problem-solving excursions. Each excursion will include different activities, with fifth- and seventh-grade students exploring the wilderness through mapping and geocaching, learning about beavers and bog ecology, and sleeping in cabins. The Laurentian Journey will teach seventh-grade students about orienteering, survival techniques, and group decision-making in the woods, with time for journaling and reflection.

When Max Schneiderman began his family’s business, it was a grocery store first and foremost. Then Schneiderman’s began to carry a few furniture items and slowly these grew to overshadow the cans of soup and produce until the furnishings finally swallowed the foodstuffs whole.
Now, Schneiderman's Furniture has spread from the Iron Range to spots throughout the Twin Cities. The showrooms stock local and foreign furniture from more than 100 manufacturers. Many items in stock can be customized in color and texture to match a homeowner's current obsession with plastic flamingos.
Wildwoods’ volunteers work to make a difference in animals’ lives, aiming to strengthen the bond between humans and animals, exercise compassion, and give a second chance to animals that humans have hurt through landscaping, pesticides, and the introduction of machines into a once-natural world. To that end, Wildwoods rescues and rehabilitates injured and orphaned animals that range from rabbits and squirrels to woodpeckers and deer. The organization provides rescued wildlife with shelter and medical care until the adolescent animals can survive in the wild. Volunteers clean the enclosures daily, medicate sick animals, and feed them specialized diets that can include hazelnuts, milk replacer, and vegetables, depending on the species and age of the animal.
