With an armada of kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards at their command, Midwest Paddlesport Adventures' team spearheads expeditions to bodies of water across Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Frequent trips include calming floats down the Fox River––which is densely populated by local wildlife––and Lake Andrea, a former quarry characterized by local rocks. The expert navigators safely guide groups to their destinations, pointing out animal tracks and majestic waterfowl and they commute to the office.

Founder Rick Sweitzer started the adventure travel company in 1983 before leading one of the first amateur dogsled expeditions to North Pole. Driven by his vision, the guides and instructors of The Northwest Passage lead travelers of all skill and fitness levels to some of the most dramatic terrain on the planet. Locally, the team leads outings around the Chicago area, ranging from stand-up paddleboarding classes on Lake Michigan to kayaking and camping trips in Door County, Wisconsin. As for the rest of the world, Northwest Passage sends it adventurers to conquer it locale by stunning locale during programs that include hiking across Europe, trekking to remote Polar regions, and dressing up like scientists to infiltrate Area 51.

The die-hard paddlers of Geneva Kayak Center stay on the move throughout the year?both in their watercraft and across the globe. From May to September, they are headquartered in and around Chicago, where they teach kayaking during courses, workshops, and quick orientations, and dole out kayaks, canoes, and tubes for those who want to explore the Fox River's whitewater on their own.

When cold breezes start to blow through the Windy City, they head to Saint Marys, Georgia, to lead kayak camps and sea adventures on the Cumberland Island National Seashore. They also lead curated adventures off the costs of Alaska and Maine and in Wisconsin's idyllic Door County, where kayakers might spot deer grazing on grass or nibbling on cheese curds.

Q&A with John Chase, General Manager

What is one of your signature services? How is it performed?

We rent kayaks and lead classes in a beautiful protected quarry in downtown Naperville. We provide the boat, life jacket, and paddle, along with instruction to help you enjoy your time on the water. We are experts at helping beginning kayakers feel confident and comfortable in their boats. Nothing makes us happier than the smiles we see when people come off the water.

When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?

We started Naperville Kayak because we felt a huge need to get people outdoors and away from their smart phones. Our area has so much to offer, and we wanted to help people experience something they've never expected, right in their backyard. We hope to be the springboard to bigger adventures.
