The Santa Cruz community fought to relocate the offshore oil rigs that were being placed along the central coast in the late 1970s. After winning their initial battle, they founded Save Our Shores to act on behalf of Monterey Bay citizens in the event of future threats to the coastline. Today, Save Our Shores continues this work through three primary initiatives. The plastic-pollution, clean-boating, and ocean-awareness programs all contribute to the health and cleanliness of the marine ecosystem. Save Our Shores also advocates for local bans on single-use plastic bags and polystyrene containers, and hosts more than 200 beach cleanups per year with teams of volunteer sanctuary stewards to remove litter that may harm the environment.

Popular globetrotting pop collective Adventures in Helsinki transforms Santa Cruz’s historic Rio Theatre into a throbbing, futuristic discotheque as its latest tour storms American shores. Formed in Melbourne, the ambidextrous dance band stirs fans with a tornado of flamboyant sounds, infectious anthems, and commitment-free instrument swapping. With hits such as “Do the Whirlwind” and latest single “Contact High,” lead crooner Cameron Bird and his cakewalking team of tunesmiths tickle ear bones and rehabilitate ankles in support of its latest album, Moment Bends. During the kaleidoscopic performance, the band lures in dance floors with 10-foot hooks and sounds culled from hypnotic synths, romantic glockenspiels, and strummed chest hairs. Filling out the bill, girl-group garage rockers The Sandwitches enchant with sardonically lovelorn themes and harmonies.
The name Planet Gemini would imply that this club has two sides to it, but that's not quite accurate. There are at least three. Since opening Planet Gemini more than 20 years ago, the Lane brothers—Frankie and Anthony—have built a venue that functions as a comedy club, a live-music space, and a full-service restaurant. Each night, the club transforms into something new: on Tuesday, Frankie, a master chef, puts together a menu of homemade Italian food as Anthony croons classic Italian songs; Wednesday and Sunday are dance nights, with Latin bands taking the stage as the audience dances the pachanga, merengue, and salsa; and Thursday is for karaoke, during which professional lighting and sound make amateurs feel like rock stars or a circus tiger.
On Friday and Saturday night, however, the music gives way to laughter, as the stage is reserved for a rotation of nationally touring comedians. Although Planet Gemini is mostly known for featuring up-and comers—many of whom have been featured on HBO, Comedy Central, and other national programming—they've also had the good fortune to host famous funny men such as George Lopez and Jimmy Fallon.
Situated in the Santa Lucia Highlands overlooking the Salinas Valley, Hahn Estate has converted what were horse and cattle ranches into the birthplace for award-winning wines. Among the first wineries in California to be certified for its sustainability, the facility spreads its production across six vineyards and more than 1,000 acres of Monterey County land. That land yields premium selections of pinot noir, chardonnay, and syrah, or as Hahn Estate views them, tasty celebrations of the estate's unique location.
When Monica Wason moved to Salinas, she was in the midst of planning an addition to her family. Though she soon discovered that there were no prenatal health venues near her new home, she was undeterred. She decided that she'd simply open one herself, and founded Green Belly as a wellness center for fellow pregnant women. Soon, her clientele expanded to include postnatal and non-pregnant women as well as men, prompting Monica to broaden her efforts. She funneled her experiences as a nurse and massage therapist into pampering services, and hired a teaching staff to help lead yoga, Pilates, and belly-dancing sessions. Today, she continues to welcome guests from all walks of life into Green Belly's lime- and cream-colored rooms to fulfill their wellness needs. As sun beams through the studio's skylight and bay windows, her aestheticians work to brighten faces with Jadience skincare products. She exclusively stocks the spa with organic products, complementing the center's nature-inspired décor while also honoring the trees who taught her slow-breathing techniques.
Wix furnishes budding craftsmen with the tools to engineer custom candles and soaps on hardwood picnic-style tables in a spacious craft studio. After a brief instructional rundown, freshly learned candlestick makers and soap sculptors are set free to choose base wax or soap color, mold shape, and one of more than 30 scents such as bubblegum, coffee, and molten happiness. Crafters then embed colorful dry pieces of wax or soap into molds in shapes such as hearts, stars, and moons before a staff member pours in a melted scented mixture that holds the final product together like handcuffs made of wedding vows. Wix's accommodating staff also walks visitors through assembling a beeswax pillar candle using three sheets of beeswax. Candles and soaps are ready for pickup within two days.
