Erica Motley weighed 400 pounds when her doctor told her she was well on her way toward developing diabetes. The threat of disease—or worse—gave her the motivation she needed to drop 80 pounds and 16 percent body fat. This struggle also inspired her to become a licensed Zumba instructor and to help others like herself through EM Creative Fitness and Wellness. Despite her success, Erica works just as hard as her students to achieve her goals and leads each workout with an effervescent attitude.
If the floorboards at Nan's School of Dance could talk, they would speak kindly of the tapping toes and pointed feet that have graced their surfaces for more than 30 years. In 1975, owner Nan Smith began teaching students in Yadkinville and later opened a dance studio in Greensboro in 1982. Twenty years later, Nan passed the torch and ancient family sweat towel to her oldest daughter, Jennifer Grinwis, who runs the studio with the same passion for teaching dance and instilling self-discipline, poise, and self-esteem.
Talented dance instructors lead students of all age levels in disciplines such as ballet, jazz, tap, and hip-hop. Patrons can also sign up to for a Kenpo karate class with resident martial-arts guru Mike Carr or get hips swinging and calories spontaneously combusting with Zumba classes infused with Latin dance moves.
Julie Luther has spent the last 25 years encouraging greater health and fitness in whatever way she can. She has shared fitness secrets as a columnist for the Greensboro News and Record, created and hosted her own televised fitness show, and even spent three years training members of the Marine Corps Reserve. She continues her efforts at Julie Luther's PurEnergy Fitness Center, and has recruited a staff certified in personal training, spinning, yoga, and other fields to help people get in shape.
Rows of treadmills, weight machines, stationary bikes, and elliptical machines line the sage-green walls inside her intimate studio. Instructors encourage students through body-sculpting, yoga, and spinning classes, as well as SilverSneakers workouts designed to help older clients stay in shape and hustle youngsters in footraces. The coaches also structure specialized boot camps and 12-week personal-training programs to help individuals attain personal goals.
The mixologists at ABC Bartending School divulge saloon secrets during certification-based and recreational bartending classes. During two-week certification courses, burgeoning bartenders mix classic and popular drinks while learning about alcohol laws, responsible liquor service, and stocking and inventory. Alternatively, an entertaining mixology course lets amateurs shake up drinks and take cover from projectile champagne corks behind an ornate bar with mirrors and gold trim. Once finished imparting their knowledge, the instructors set students up with ABC’s job-placement program, which puts certified graduates to work everywhere from restaurants and nightclubs to the zero-G sports bar where astronauts celebrate successful trips to the moon.
In 1976, educator, musician, and kinesiologist Robin Wes longed for a children's gym that prioritized personal growth over competition. Unveiled at a time when physical-education classes pushed students to focus almost exclusively on winning, Robin's program was swiftly adopted and is now used in more than 300 Little Gyms worldwide. Robin still pens original music to accompany lessons, which engage whippersnappers aged 4 months to 12 years with gymnastics, dance, karate, and parent and child activities.
Each of The Little Gym's classes introduces simple movements that sharpen motor skills and set brains whirring, allowing kids to progress at their own pace until they can finally build a computer out of macaroni and glitter. Staff members strive to build a base for lifelong social skills and self-assurance with each exercise, including activities rooted purely in fun, such as summer camps or birthday parties, which helped The Little Gym to earn title of #1 Birthday Chain in Parents Magazine.
