As part of its efforts to raise awareness about the difficulties veterans face upon returning home, Seeds of Hope, a project of the Youth Advocacy League, creates community gardens to help support veterans and their families. Youth groups such as Girl Scouts work with veterans to plant and maintain the gardens. This partnership helps show appreciation for veterans while also providing powerful learning experiences for children and teens. The organization’s efforts caught the attention of TribLive after the group was honored in the Jefferson Awards for Public Service Youth Service Challenge.

About 12 miles south of downtown Pittsburgh, young students examine insect larva among the remains of a decomposing log, wade through a creek as they search for salamanders, and test water percolation in forest soils. At The Outdoor Classroom, situated in a 475-acre park, students participate in outdoor field trips where they gain opportunities to connect with the natural world—a new experience for many of these preschoolers and third- to seventh-grade students. The field-trip curricula, such as introductions to ecosystems or examinations of relationships in natural communities, are designed to reinforce the national curricula modules followed by many school districts. In addition to field-trip opportunities, The Outdoor Classroom also sponsors summer day camps and community education programs about topics that reinforce the connection between people and southwestern Pennsylvania's environment, such as backyard gardening.
East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) was founded in 1970 by a team of local seminary students to distribute breakfast to children who were going to school without meals. Today, the organization combines the goodwill of more than 40 congregations, local businesses, and volunteers to run a trio of programs dedicated to alleviating hunger, providing housing, and serving youth in the community. Its Meals on Wheels program, emergency food pantry, and soup kitchen distribute warm lunches and fresh groceries to an average of 400 people every day. Individuals experiencing homelessness can rest in the onsite shelter, which houses more than 40 men every night and provides access to social services. EECM further seeks to end the cycle of poverty with a series of in-school and afterschool programs that engage youth on vital issues including drug-use prevention and sustainability.
Community Health Clinic of Butler County provides dental and health care to uninsured Butler County residents with chronic and acute conditions such as diabetes, lung disorders, and asthma. The clinic can also refer them to specialty services and provide certain medications at no cost. A total of 52 medical professionals volunteer their time in the clinic, including 10 dentists and two oral surgeons. In order to be eligible, clients must qualify for other government services and have incomes less than 200% of the poverty level. Then, they receive a full physical examination and are directed to dental and specialty services. A variety of basic medical treatments can be provided onsite, including nutrition counseling, EKGs, immunizations, and teeth cleanings and extractions.

The family that owns and operates Nu-Life Cleaners founded the business 58 years ago, back when it was still considered improper to acknowledge the existence of stains. Today, the clan continues to purge filth from dresses, coats, and sweaters, and even clean, press, and package bridal gowns to help them last until your next wedding.
