Visit Shoemaker & Hardt Coffee House and Country Store and you’ll be transported to a turn-of-the-century general store—that is, if the whole world back then happened to smell like coffee. The historical storefront is lined with a collection of antiques, from Coca-Cola ephemera to taxidermy; inside, staffers mix up mochas and top off cappuccinos with foam. The menu also includes teas, hot chocolate, and specialty flavored lattes, such as English Toffee and the Chocolate Grasshopper, a chocolate-peppermint concoction that can double as a conscience if you pour it over a Pinocchio. In addition to antiques and drinks, Shoemaker & Hardt also collects marbles, candles, and old-fashioned candies.

At Ace's Gourmet Paninis, culinary-school grad Chef Van presides over an unlikely marriage between the Italian-born panini and the flavors of Southern comfort fare. He presses only quality ingredients into his sandwiches, including three signature paninis loaded with chicken, beef brisket, or pulled pork slathered in house barbecue sauce. His menu also flaunts a separate breakfast section that highlights paninis and burritos stuffed with more eggs and meats than a vending machine for bodybuilders. His renditions of childhood favorites, such as peanut butter and jelly, even please pintsize palates. Patrons can settle in to surf free WiFi in the eatery or grab a takeout container to feast at home.:
A marriage of former teacher Tiffany Key's passion for cooking and her creative inclinations, Haute Mama Dessert Company crafts sweet confections inside a colorful shop layered in hot pink and leopard print. Key’s eye for color informs Haute Mama’s decadent cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other sugary morsels, which come in a rainbow of rotating flavors that draw on the chef’s southern culinary upbringing. Each batch of treats, including gluten-free and vegan goods, comes wrapped in Haute Mama's distinct pink, brown, and leopard packaging. Bright ribbons fall across the shop’s precisely designed corporate baskets, while artfully arranged spreads cater to larger events such as banquets, birthdays, or tea parties celebrating a stuffed animal’s newest litter.
Those seeking a break from their busy day routinely pop into Frogg Coffee Bar & Creperie, where they indulge in a variety of handcrafted coffees, crepes, baked goods, and sandwiches that are prepared by a talented team of baristas and chefs. The menu showcases a selection of sweet and savory crepes, stuffed with ingredients like strawberries and Nutella or scrambled omelette, but also features sandwiches, piping hot soups, and a few wild cards like a grilled cheese waffle. And, of course, there are the specialty coffee drinks, each one made special by the addition of the baristas' famous latte art designs.
Owner Donna Smith-Grice describes her father Jimmy Smith as drinking his coffee the way he lived his life: "strong and sweet." Inspired by the wafting aromas of his daily coffee pots drifting up from her childhood memories, she opened her own coffee shop and borrowed his first initial to complete the name of the newly born Lazy J Coffee.
In keeping with its homey origins, the café's interior seems more like an eclectic living room than a restaurant, with well-worn leather couches facing a faux fireplace and a small wooden buffet topped with old-fashioned candleholders. Amidst this domestic comfort, baristas steam mugfulls of the shop's signature grind and specialty espresso drinks or fill cups with fruit smoothies that, like recovered cyborgs, are entirely organic.
