For a more detoxifying practice, the teachers bump up the studio temperature to a moderate heat during hot-yoga sessions, taking advantage of heat’s ability to spur on sweating to purge pupils’ bodies of toxins in preparation for the more enjoyable toxins of the weekend. Students recovering from injury, those with a limited range of motion, or pupils who own extremely shy sticky mats can develop their yoga practice through private lessons. Studio Sabor helps students of all experience and fitness levels trade in their bodies for leaner, more agile models in energetic dance classes held seven days a week. Bodies move in beginner classes that explore reggaeton, merengue, and cumbia styles, shake to the Latin-inspired beats of Zumba, or lounge to the yogic tape recordings of a blossoming lotus flower. More advanced students can manipulate slim weights in Zumba toning classes that build strength and deconstruct calories.
Two to four pianists engage in a well-matched duel each evening at Chez Cirque, sampling from more than 100 audience requests spanning all major musical genres. A Paris-inspired stage outfitted with red curtains, opulent lighting, and a state-of-the-art sound system tickles all five senses, and a $5 happy hour martini tantalizes your sixth, apple-centric sense with an apple-buttercup concoction made with vodka, DeKuyper Buttershots, Kahlua, and DeKuyper Apple Pucker. Hours become happy Wednesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., entertained by drink specials that also include $3 Bud Light drafts and a free snack buffet on Fridays and Saturdays. In 2001, Carrie Rezabek Dorr's only venue for her Pure Barre workouts—a full-body workout that uses the ballet barre to assist clients as they perform small isometric movements and muscle-lengthening stretches—was the basement of an office building. Crowds drawn by Carrie's choreographing expertise and the infectious music of her routines necessitated expansion, however, and Pure Barre soon spread its franchises across the country, spurred by mentions in Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and Health magazines.
Pure Barre guides clients through precise isometric movements that craft lean, not bulky, muscles. The workouts use small movements to sculpt muscle, as well as lift and tighten traditional problem areas such as the thighs, abs, seat, and arms.
