The mission of Breakthrough Kent Denver is two-fold: 1st to increase the educational and social opportunities of motivated, under-resourced, urban middle school students through a quality year-round program; and 2nd to motivate and train talented high school and college students for careers in education.
Abyss Scuba's crew of dive masters and instructors has enough combined experience to papier mâché together a life-size scuba diver out of all their certifications. Their courses range from introductory discovery dives to professional rescue-diver instruction. A wide range of specialty courses prepares divers for adverse conditions, deep diving, the use of nitrox, and chance encounters with James Cameron’s personal submarine. Not content to let their students test their skills in their bathtubs at home, the divers at Abyss lead annual excursions to diving spots around the world.
Future rock stars and renowned orchestra players could very well be picking up their first instruments at Mile High Academy of Music LLC. In its studio, instructors teach novice and intermediate students to sing and play all sorts of instruments, from guitar to trombone to violin. After one year of instruction, the teachers let musical pupils in grades 4–8 rehearse and perform in an ensemble, where they discover that applause grants every musician the gift of flight.
The Colorado School of Acting's directors, Elizabeth Horne and Troy Horne, combine their dual loves of stage and screen to impart acting chops to students of all ages and experience levels. Elizabeth—who has acted in more than 25 plays and 12 movies—and Troy—a sitcom and film producer who appeared on Broadway in the Tony Award–winning musical Rent—staff their team with veteran acting instructors, each of whom have more than 10 years of experience in the biz. During their classes, they teach students to focus and perform under a variety of circumstances, with workshops in subjects ranging from improv and commercial work to audition skills and voiceovers. They welcome kids for acting summer camps, where they introduce fundamentals of memorization, character development, and rehearsal. Instructors also help thespians develop with more advanced training, including filmmaking summer camps for kids, and a certificate program for all age levels that requires students to audition or present a signed permission slip from David Schwimmer.
Both the male and female DU Pioneers execute ally-oops in Magness Arena all season long, combining athletic prowess with top-notch coaching to thrill the hoops-loving masses. The men’s team, led by senior captain Kyle Lewis, starts the season backed by last year’s 15-game home court winning streak, the ninth longest in the nation and the fourth sweatiest in the Rockies. The women’s team returns this year with four of its five starters from last season, and a 18-13 record produced under the consummate leadership of head coach Erik Johnson. Once the last last-second three-pointer has swished, the players will happily sign their John Hancocks on shirts, photos, basketballs, and firstborn sons.
