Though most vintners have made their wines from grapes, the Shook family turned their focus to other fruits. Starting in 1991, they began fermenting batches of juice from mangoes, red raspberries, limes, and oranges. In 1997, they opened their 14,000 square foot winery shaded by three large oak trees ?where licensed winemakers and distributors ferment and bottle 42 varieties of exotic wines stamped with the Sunshine Tree, the Florida Department of Citrus's mark of quality. Their eclectic selection encompasses citrus, tropical-fruit, berry, stone-fruit, and vegetable wines, each made entirely from the juice indicated on the label. The winery also makes and distributes wine-smoothie mixes and wine pouches, sherries, ports, and champagnes.
One of the most unique things about Working Cow Homemade Ice cream is that the company delivers its many quality ice-cream-shop flavors straight to customer homes. Each tub brims with hand-blended ice cream chilled in batch freezers, giving it a smoother texture than is even possible from beating it with a mallet. Since 1993, Working Cow ice cream has been crafted from ingredients procured from local vendors, including dairy from cows that are raised without hormonal supplements. Each of the 25 flavors is also sweetened without high-fructose corn syrup and some have chunks of their flavor?such as cheesecake or coconut flakes?folded right in. Another popular flavor, Crazy Cake, is a dessert trifecta with chunks of yellow cake, blue icing, and sprinkles that tastes even better when you use a birthday candle as a spoon.
Outside the door of The Reef at Redington Shores, fishermen dock their boats after morning voyages in the sparkling Gulf waters and deliver their fresh catches to waiting employees. The staff members display fresh-caught local finds in their glass cases alongside non-local species such as Maine lobster and schools that are flown in daily. Gourmet spices and seasonings fill the store's racks in a rainbow of colors and aromas—standing ready to flavor filets. Ready-to-eat items, however, come pre-seasoned, such as the almond-crusted flounder filets and the crab bisque. In addition to seafood, the store carries 50 different wines and hosts wine tastings weekly, which is as often as a yo-yo dog needs to be walked.
During World War I, Greek immigrant Louis Pappas served in the Army as a personal chef to General John Pershing. To give the hungry general some extra nutrition, Louis began adding scoops of potato salad to his traditional greek salads. When Louis returned to the United States, he opened up his own restaurant, Louis Pappas Riverside Café, where he would re-create this signature dish using fresh produce from his own ranch in Tarpon Springs.
Today, Louis Pappas's grandson continues his grandfather's old Florida family tradition at Pappas Ranch. There, he and his kitchen serve up a new menu of fresh seafood, poultry, sandwiches, street tacos, hand-cut steaks, and barbecue dishes whose "family flair" has been lauded by Metromix Tampa Bay. They continue to scoop savory housemade potato salad into their internationally renowned Louis Pappas Famous greek salad, tossing it in massive bowls that serve as many as four diners. Bartenders dole out glasses of locally brewed craft beers and wine or mix cocktails and martinis at the full center bar with flat-screen TVs.
The restaurant's decor channels that of the original Pappas family ranch. In the dining room, spacious booths are surrounded by rustic wooden walls, and outside is a covered outdoor patio.
