Endless rows of machines, friendly staff, and two locations give the no-frills sweat shop a comforting neighborhood feel. Expect to find eligible, state-of-the-art machines, intensive and expert fitness coaching, and a bevy of classes such as yoga, power sculpt, abs and flexibility, and cardio hip-hop.
When Leah returned to the coast of Southern California after years of living inland, she did so to ensure that her unborn son could grow up with plenty of sun, sand, and water. But her homecoming blessed her with more than just the familiar beaches of her youth. Leah also discovered yoga, using the practice as a means to heal and grow stronger after her pregnancy. She became a passionate yogi, and eventually an instructor. Then, Leah and her family moved to Hawaii. "My husband and I knew that moving to Hawaii was not something ordinary people like us got to do," she explains. "Therefore, from the minute we landed on the island, we made it our goal to not only make each day count for us, but to share our island adventures with others.?
All of this culminated in Leah starting her own business in Honolulu, Yoga Kai Paddle Yoga. It's a business that allows her to combine all of her life's passions, as she teaches classes that fuse yoga with stand-up paddleboarding. After guiding students out to float on Oahu's pristine waters, she leads them through a series of simple stretches and poses. The motion of the water serves as a natural way to test balance and form, and it encourages practitioners to develop body awareness in a way that doing yoga in a classroom or on a leaky waterbed just can't.
It’s common to see TRX suspension bands wrapped around the palm trees on the beach near Ala Moana Boulevard. The site is home to SOHI Fitness’ outdoor boot camps, which are run by owner and ACE-certified personal trainer Megan Clark, who has a degree in kinesiology and is the only trainer in Hawaii able to certify military personnel as TRX instructors, and her team of experienced trainers. To keep their clients engaged during their indoor and outdoor boot camps, pyramid workouts, and personal-training sessions, they rely on the TRX suspension-training system’s array of exercises, as well as sports drills. These may include sandbag lifting, agility-ladder running, and plyometrics.
As one of CrossFit’s first proponents on the island, Bryant Powers was just happy to find some friends to work out with. After discovering fellow CrossFit buffs online, Bryant began hosting group workouts in Kapiolani Park with his friends Craig and Hollis. Although only two people attended that first class, the trio kept hosting classes, shuttling between the park and Bryant’s garage, until they had a large enough following to open their own gym. Several years later, CrossFit Oahu now operates five locations spread across the island and cultivates a community devoted to results-oriented fitness. Incoming students work their way up to intense WODs with instruction in Olympic lifts and proper form. Passionate instructors help busy working professionals burn fat and build muscle, or ramp up workouts in preparation for CrossFit competitions. Members also cross-train in MMA striking, mountain climbing, or extreme rolodexing.
