Fitness-minded visitors sweat their way through The Sports Club’s more than 100,000 square feet of equipment, group exercise classes, and workout-enhancing amenities. Patrons who thrive on camaraderie can get energized during group classes in one of five practice rooms, and lone wolves can try their hands, limbs, and cores at weight machines by Cybex, Hammer Strength, and Life Fitness. Seventy cardiovascular machines fill the rest of the floor space, each equipped with a personal television that can play any home-brought DVDs, CDs, or flip books. During the warmer seasons, staff members uncover 2 of the 3 pools and 5 of the 14 indoor tennis courts, creating open-air recreational opportunities that earned the facility Hour Detroit magazine's award for Best Outdoor Tennis Court in 2008 and 2009. Employees can keep an eye on guests' youngsters in the childcare room, which brims with age-appropriate activities for toddlers and stuffed-animal focus groups.

Bloomfield Gymnastics has spent more than 25 years coaching budding gymnasts. The staff of former competitors and fitness enthusiasts breed a new generation of athletes with gymnastics, cheerleading, and tumbling classes for children aged 2 to 18. Classes of up to eight students begin with simple warm-ups and maneuvers in KinderGym, held in a colorful gym with balance beams, uneven bars, and all other equipment essential to Olympic-level competition with the exception of Olympic-level tomato hurlers. Sessions progress to the challenging jumps and stunts of Cheernastics and the conditioning of adult classes. Private lessons, camps, and supervised open gym sessions serve up alternative occasions to hone flips, flourishes, and balance that will rival that of 10 power-line-perching crows.

From Romulus Athletic Center's indoor track, runners and joggers can watch planes as they take off and land at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The simple pleasure of an expansive view is a reminder that exercise can be enjoyable, not merely strenuous. This commitment to fulfillment through physical activity can be found across the sprawling facilities: the five-pool aquatics area features a 240-foot lazy river and a two-story waterslide, and the two gymnasiums host games of basketball and volleyball. The 6,000-square-foot fitness area houses ample equipment for sculpting physiques, including a 30-foot climbing wall and more than 10,000 pounds of weight plates, which is more than enough to challenge the world's strongest man or the world's weakest King Kong.
