Even before she became a certified trainer, Laurie Henderson led and inspired her fellow athletes as the captain of the women's Central Michigan basketball team. She then carried her passion for guiding others through a master's of exercise science from Kent State University, and today she continues her mission at Fly Dog Fitness.
Laurie's boot camps know no limits, taking place outdoors, in the water, and on dry land. She uses standard exercise equipment and park benches, yoga mats and soft grass. She gets her students to work up a sweat whether it's sunny or dark—even in inclement weather.
Masters Studios trains students to defend themselves using the traditional styles of Shaolin Kempo karate, kung fu, jujitsu, and tai chi. After an introductory lesson, instructors pace students according to their skills in programs designed to heighten mental focus, improve strength and technique, develop responsive strategies, and build a healthy lifestyle. In addition to standard classes, the studio runs summer camps and maintains a list of its black belt team.
Shawn Kephart, the founder of K180 Fitness, uses his own experience struggling with body image and weight loss to lead his students towards their fitness goals. His comprehensive regimen approaches fitness from eight core areas, using a 20,000 square foot gym ergonomically designed for motivation. Certified trainers—many of whom have overcome body image issues, disabilities, or chronic illness—lead classes and personal training sessions, and the gym is also equipped with a full-service kitchen and private lockers and showers.
CTK Fitness’s troupe of certified health heroes connects consistent workouts to improved eating habits to help clients lose weight and achieve fitness goals. Each 60-minute boot-camp class begins with a gentle warm-up to loosen limbs from atrophic tendencies before enlisting bodies in a fast-paced circuit-training routine, including stations for weight training, cardio, and acceptable bed making. Focused on treating bodies inside and out, CTK complements fitness classes with specially designed eating plans. A certified trainer works with individual svelte seekers to create a preplanned menu and nurture corporeal vessels with either 1,200–1,500 healthful calories per day or one loving grandmother to tuck them in at night.
