The Midwest Classic golf tournament—which was just added to the PGA's Nationwide Tour in December—unleashes a field of 156 pro golfers to tackle the rolling fairways of the Nicklaus Golf Club. The four passes grant access to any of the competition rounds of of this seven-day charity tournament hosted by the Kansas City Crusaders, which raises funds and donates tournament proceeds to Children’s Mercy Hospital. When pro golfers start their scorecards on Thursday, August 18, families are free to stand on the sidelines or take youngsters to a kids' play area for face painting and inflatable sports games. Check the tournament schedule for event details and exact times.
Now in its 21st year, the Performing Arts Series brings internationally recognized acts to dazzle Kansas City–based eyes and ears in the relatively intimate space of Yardley Hall. As one of Hawaii's premier musical groups, The Makaha Sons paint a soundscape of swaying palm trees, white sand beaches, and paddle-surfing schnauzers with their rich, traditional harmonies. The Grammy-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet crafts delicate chords as it ushers through an eclectic catalog of Stravinsky, Bach, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. Under the direction of internationally recognized conductor Philippe Entremont, the Munich Symphony will tackle Mozart's Requiem K. 626 on November 6, with the aid of the chorus Gloriae Dei Cantores, and November 12 marks the arrival of journeyman drummer Max Weinberg, resident beat-keeper for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and former leader of the house bands on The Tonight Show and Late Night, both hosted by Conan O'Brien. All Performing Arts Series shows take place at Yardley Hall, a medium-size theater known for its excellent acoustics, tasty concessions (not included in today's deal), and absence of dive-bombing pelicans. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Louis Bar and Laura Cantu have made a habit of competing on the world stage. As six-time French National champions and five-time World Finalists in Argentine tango and swing, they're more than capable of helming the educators at Louis & Company Ballroom Dance Studio. Along with the rest of the instructors, they teach three main dance styles and the various permutations contained within each. Latin classes cover the upbeat tempo and swinging hips of samba, cha-cha, and bolero, and the studio's ballroom classes celebrate slow and smooth elegance. Louis and Laura also lead protégés in the seductive duel that is tango, named for the tangerines that you typically hurl at dancers instead of applause.
Lunar Bowl casts a nebular net across rounds of pin punishment, which unravel daily across 32 state-of-the-art synthetic bowling lanes. Built in 2001, the 38,000-square-foot facility has played host to the PBA National Tour twice, including the tour's nationally televised finals and nontelevised slip 'n' slide experiments in the 11th frame. The center's celestial theme soars over into The Blue Moon Lounge, where bowlers can take a break from strikes and spares to watch big games or create deep-space shadow puppets on a 150-inch HD projector screen. Guests can visit the newly built arcade, and the facility will be non-smoking as of June 3. On weekends, Lunar Bowl drifts further into intergalactic realms with laser-lit cosmic bowling, and, buzzing with the chimes of new high scores, an arcade provides various digital challenges.
The acoustic whoosh of swooping golf clubs welcomes players to Peculiar Golf & Learning Center, where a stable of 16 driving range stalls fosters flusher drives and straighter approaches for players of all abilities. The range features both natural grass and artificial turf hitting surfaces, and clubbers can take aim at distant targets or windswept parade floats from covered or open-air hitting bays, all of which are illuminated by towering lights for late-night practice. A staff of resident aces presides over lessons conducted at the Center, where they help correct swing imbalances and illiterate clubs at the Center's practice green or sand bunker. A fully-stocked pro shop rounds out the Center's deep reservoir of golf resources with an array of clubs, bags, apparel, and other golf gear from brands such as Ping, Callaway, Nike, and TaylorMade.
