Named for Civil War general Alfred Pleasonton, Pleasanton is steeped in the history of the War Between the States. The town is located near the border between Kansas and Missouri in an area that witnessed fierce battles and skirmishes both before and during the war. Although Pleasanton's Mine Creek Battlefield is closed between late October and early April, the John Brown Museum in nearby Osawatomie offers year-round tours of the cabin that served as Brown's base of operations. Those whose appetite for nature is piqued by the lodge's grounds can head for the Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge, a 7,500-acre tract of forest and prairie in Pleasanton. The area around the refuge is home to dozens of species of mammals, including red fox, mink, and mountain lions as well as an enormous array of birds ranging from herons to red-tail hawks.
Although massages are administered from the outside, massage therapist Marcy believes that the benefits should go deeper. Whereas deep-tissue massages plumb the musculature to squeeze out toxins and allow the body to flush them out, reflexology triggers specific points on the foot that correspond with parts of the body in order to help heal a range of ailments. In keeping with treating the inside from the outside, Marcy also draws out toxins from the pores of the feet with footbaths and absorbs oil from the skin with facials.

Do you use any products or brands you're particularly proud of? What makes them uniquely effective?
I have worked with BioElements since 1996. It is great for all skins and I am pleased that it contains no perfumes or fragrances. The All About You Botanical line has some fabulous ingredients, like salicylic and glycolic acids that work hard to treat damaged skin.
Besides making clients happy, what do you like most about your job?
My clients make me happy. I've been lucky to be in business for 20 years and I love coming to work. Seeing someone come in with damaged skin and watching their glowing smiles after a facial is quite rewarding.
What's the most common beauty mistake you see people make? What would you recommend they do instead?
They don't wash their face. If you only wash once, wash your face at night so you don't roll around on a dirty pillowcase day after day. Your face collects dirty makeup and oily skin that you come in contact with each and every night. Plus, your skin tells on you when you don't wash it.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Facials are relaxing, but they are also stimulating for both men and women. It gives an extra push to clean the dead skin cells off and bring the new skin to the surface; it can take years off of your look.
Clients at Healing Hands Massage Therapy, LLC are in the balm-like palms of Paula Liberty, LMT. Dedicated to helping her clients feel their best, the massage therapist creates custom massages from a blend of several modalities, including Swedish, sports, and deep-tissue massage. These tailored sessions address a client's particular issues, such as headaches or a sports-related injury—perhaps falling down after a chess-loss tantrum. The sessions also tackle other issues in the form of stress, high blood pressure, and limited range of motion.
