What if a zombie apocalypse ravaged the 1950s? That's the question that sparked Matt Berri's “When Pinups Attack,” a narrative series that combines his eye for striking compositions with his offbeat sense of humor. Those same elements pervade Matt's modern and retro pinup and portrait photography, which have been his specialties over a decade-long career. Rather than snap straightforward shots, Matt prefers images that playfully encompass each client's personality, whether they're relaxing in bed with a glass of wine or messily flinging paint onto a white backdrop.
In the midst of an industry so saturated in emerging technology that fierce competition is law, the Twin Cities Photography Group operates as a cooperative to nurture the artistic development and technical skills of amateur and professional photographers. To expand the photographic community and foster a passion for creativity, the group keeps a clean studio space for picture snappers to host shoots and workshops.
Skilled instructors educate the public on basic photography fundamentals and camera-specific tips that allow students to get the most from advanced equipment without threatening to cut its weekly allowance. When her son was born, Melanie Painter read everything she could about communicating with children. The crash course in early childhood development not only primed Melanie for motherhood, but also working with youngsters as a photographer. To make photo shoots fun for kids, she hosts portrait parties where children snack, play with props, and, afterward, each receive a 5"x7" print. The rest of her on-location and in-studio shoots accommodate newborns, expectant moms, and families, all of whom she photographs with a combination of candid and posed shots.
The sharp-eyed shutterbugs at Flash Digital Portraits take a timely and convenient approach to photography, but they never skimp on creativity. Inside their studios, flash bulbs pop as the photographer captures grins from a wide range of subjects including infants, high-school seniors, and entire families. To further personalize sessions, clients can choose from a variety of props and plenty of colorful backgrounds. They can even bring special items and mementos from home such as a favorite stuffed animal or a birthday cake. After the shutters snap for the final time, Flash Portraits’ photo technicians get to work on customizing the results, outfitting collages with unique borders and other enhancements.
