Boot Camps in Hawaii

Early-morning light envelops Lee-Ann Watanabe and her troupe of dedicated boot campers in Kaka'ako's quiet neighborhood setting. Watanabe gives the go-ahead and campers sprint, burpee, lift, or plank—breaking an early-morning sweat. This is a common scene at 2CW HI boot camp.

A former coach potato turned triathlete, Lee-Ann Watanabe knows what it takes to get in shape. Drawing on her supportive yet tough demeanor, she motivates groups through intense cardio and resistance training in Kakaako Park, Alapai Park, or in the Boca HI Studio, earning her business features in Midweek and other local publications. Every workout, she changes up the routines—which draw heavily from functional exercises and plyometrics—to prevent muscles from becoming bored and absent-mindedly ingesting a whole box of Twinkies. Dedicated to helping exercisers of all experience levels, she scales her workouts to match individual goals, working to ensure all participants benefit equally.

It’s common to see TRX suspension bands wrapped around the palm trees on the beach near Ala Moana Boulevard. The site is home to SOHI Fitness’ outdoor boot camps, which are run by owner and ACE-certified personal trainer Megan Clark, who has a degree in kinesiology and is the only trainer in Hawaii able to certify military personnel as TRX instructors, and her team of experienced trainers. To keep their clients engaged during their indoor and outdoor boot camps, pyramid workouts, and personal-training sessions, they rely on the TRX suspension-training system’s array of exercises, as well as sports drills. These may include sandbag lifting, agility-ladder running, and plyometrics.

The people you talk to every day are typically the people who affect your life the most, like your spouse, your best friend, or, if you work out at Boot Camp Hawaii, your trainer. To encourage accountability, many of its trainers keep in daily contact with their clients via phone, email, and text. When not corresponding, trainers lead ever-changing boot-camp workouts that encompass cardio, interval training, and core strengthening, allowing clients to get more toned and finally stop hiding a washboard under their shirts. They also lead private personal-training sessions, and have coached student and professional athletes as well as soldiers.

For a more comprehensive wellness plan, the fitness instructors complement their boot camps and yoga sessions with nutrition advice. Boot Camp Hawaii?s nutritionist offers weight-management assistance, nutrition classes, and custom meal plans.

At locations throughout Oahu, Egan's Fit Body Bootcamp instructors, including owner and world champion in multiple sports Egan Inoue, share a common goal: to guide clients toward their fitness and weight-loss goals through regimented training programs. Trainers lead group workouts that integrate cardio with resistance training, strength training, and light alligator wrestling. They design the workouts to be time efficient and varied, avoiding workout plateaus that may leave clients uninspired. In addition to motivating clients to work their bodies, trainers also empower them with healthy eating guidelines.

When Roald Dahl wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he imagined a much-coveted golden ticket that granted access to myriad wonders and unveiled the inner workings of an entire industry. MetaBody created a real-life version of that ticket with the MetaBody Yoga & Fitness Pass, though it applies to fitness instead of candy. The pass grants access not to a single gym but to classes at a variety of local studios, specializing in everything from yoga to boot camp. With the freedom to move from location to location, students can sample different regimens, instructors, and styles of exercise to cobble together a program that fits their needs and goals. MetaBody's nutritionists supplement class packages by coaching clients in healthy eating, recipe cooking, and speed-reading nutrition-fact labels.

Q&A with Eden Monteilh, Owner, Trainer, Instructor

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

We keep our class sizes held to a max number to ensure a personalized experience with plenty of attention and help. Our pride is providing variety, current training methods, creative fusion formats, and amazing trainers/instructors. We also foster a strong community through our Facebook page, and we encourage our clients to interact with each other outside of the gym. To that end, we create teams for obstacle courses and host social events while encouraging a cohesive and supportive environment. Creating relationships helps people stay motivated and connected.

Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?

Yes, and its one of the things that sets instructors apart from one another. Our only rule is no explicit music. One of our trainers only plays Reggae in his boot-camps. It's one of the many things that makes our style at 360 unique.

What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?

It depends on the class, as far as intensity is concerned. We offer a variety that ranges from high-intensity and muscle-exhausting formats to low-key, gentle formats. But each class is personal: students are noticed and called by name so they know they are important to us. We encourage modifications so that all fitness levels can participate while encouraging people to push beyond their comfort zones.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

We are the only facility on the west side of the island that offers functional training and triathlon clinics. Our classes are designed to create a weeks worth of total conditioning from our High Intensity formats, to moderate and no impact formats, Yoga, Pilates and Myofascial Release. We also offer 360 Strong only formats such as Ballet Boot Camp, Run Drill Class, Plyometric Training, Cardi Yoga, TRX Boot Camps and more. If someone comes to us for one week and attends four various classes, they will have been thoroughly trained from head to toe, working dynamically and holistically.
