Arthur Murray has been a leading name in franchise dance since 1912, when the entrepreneur began selling mail-order dance lessons. Expanding his reach, he enlisted teachers to spread his signature dance lessons on first-class steamships and skyrocketed to fame in the '30s after introducing the public to such dances as the Lambeth Walk and the Big Apple. By the 1950s, Arthur and his wife, Kathryn, were hosting their own highly popular TV show on ABC, The Arthur Murray Dance Party, which ran for 12 years. Today, Arthur Murray's team prepares students for rug cutting at special events and weekend nightclub jaunts. Clients who arrive to lessons partner-less will be paired up with instructors to help assess their current skill level and make recommendations on the most appropriate program. Throughout group lessons, instructors teach the foundations of dances from a long list of styles that range from Latin to country-western, helping students to learn basic step patterns, timing, and the ability to lead or follow. These lessons are then used as a foundation for clients to learn more intermediate and advanced moves.

When it comes to spearfishing, Westside Dive and Tackle founder Kris Tyler considers using scuba tanks as cheating. So when he suits up to spearfish, the seasoned outdoorsman plunges 20 feet below the water’s surface, holds his breath in the stillness, and waits: “You become a part of the reef or rock, and you wait for the perfect situation—for the one fish that might give you that really good shot.” A self-described “water baby,” Kris has been swimming and fishing in Hawaii and Florida since childhood. Most of all, he loves the way spearfishing enables him to connect with the underwater universe and partake in a tradition Hawaiians have enriched for generations. In addition to his spearfishing expeditions, Mr. Tyler totes explorers to his favorite sunken wrecks and lava caverns off the coast of Oahu on scuba-diving charters, and equips them to chart their own expeditions or challenge blowfish to staring contests during scuba-diving certification.

Sequestered between the rolling waves of the South Pacific and the primordial beauty of Kahana State Park?s rainforests, Kualoa Ranch is the Platonic ideal of paradise. There, experienced guides lead expeditions into 4,000 acres of serene valleys and hills, stopping by famed movie sites from Jurassic Park or LOST, peering into an 800-year-old fishpond, and stopping horses or ATVs so that explorers can soak up the expansive views of southern O'ahu. Even the ranch itself is magnificent. Pavilions serve as pristine settings for guests to celebrate or yell at the sunset, nestled at the bottom of lush green mountains and on the edge of cliffs that overlook the tranquil waters of Kane'ohe Bay. Across that glimmering surface, a private, white-sand beach where guests sunbathe and lounge rests among mangroves and hau trees. Regardless of their exact coordinates, the Ranch?s visitors experience Kualoa's rich history firsthand. A prime example of the benefits of continued preservation, Kualoa has been everything from a family getaway to a World War II airstrip, but the owners have always sought to maintain the beauty that set it apart. The tradition continues today, as employees participate in community-work projects focused on restoration, taro planting, and fostering a sense of Hawaiian pride for every visitor.
