Q&A with Mahssa Hashemi, Owner and Director
Describe a time your services really changed a client's life for the better.
We have only been open for three months, and I have already seen the some of our little artists 20?30 times, and they have grown so much as creative artists. With art being taken out of schools more and more, children feel a loss in their creative outlet. Young at Art creates a studio where artists can use their imagination and truly be involved in a hands-on experience.
Art is also a great way for our artists to show self-expression and to have it created in an art piece that they can take home. As an art advocate, I love seeing how much art and our studio have created a community of artists that are constantly exploring and expressing themselves with the world of art.
What's one tip for first-time customers that will make them feel like regulars?
Have your little artist in clothes that you don't mind them getting a little paint on. All of our paint is washable and nontoxic, but it's always nice when you don't have to worry at all how their clothes will look once they leave the studio.
When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?
In 2005, I received my BA in art and performance, and in 2010, I received my master of arts in teaching from Willamette University. I have always had a passion for the arts and enriching children's lives.Thankfully, I now have a career that incorporates both. I'm very excited in sharing all that I have learned in the world of art with our community of little artists.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Our studio is constantly changing and bringing in new artistic activities. Being innovative and ever-changing is one thing that our customers really appreciate. It helps to continue to expand our artists creativity.
A small group of artists walks past racks of tassels, fringes, and beads, dragging fingers gently across the myriad textures of more than 2,000 bolts of fabric. The Instock Fabrics show room wraps and rolls a rainbow of textiles and accessories that beg to be converted into slipcovers, drapes, or a friend for a lonely kite that keeps trashing the house. Tags from popular brands, such as Covington, Waverly, and Braemore, dapple the aisles, and a gallery for custom orders parades more than 20,000 additional fabrics, distinct trims, and pieces of hardware. After perusing swatches for a bedspread or a pillowcase, patrons can suss out the tablecloth situation or utilize a set of precut curtains as a vine-style swing to perfect their Tarzan bellow.
Under the high ceilings of a warehouse dating back to the 1970s, the Salem Fencing Club team leads training sessions and competitions for its members and guests. A nonprofit organization, Salem Fencing Club aims to share the honor, chivalry, and respect integral to this historic sport with its community. To that end, they provide classes for various skill levels and organize children's day camps, filling them with lessons, crafts, games, and campfires, during which students are trained to fight the urge to toast marshmallows on their ?p?es. Though the facility is decades old, the sparring space has been updated to include virtual scoring and overhead reel-less systems.
Six preserved tarantulas, a 6-foot puzzle of The Last Supper, and a full-length pro baseball uniform: Affordable Framing can?and has?framed them all. Since 1987, the McVey family has sought out dedicated staffers to help build custom frames from their inventory of more than 60,000 feet of moulding, thousands of sheets of matting, and tons of UV protective glass. They also inspire home decorators with preframed pieces and prints from local artists. Affordable Framing also has experience with corporate framing projects, including work for the Salem Hospital and the Oregon Military Department, in addition to numerous retirement facilities.
Upon their 40-acre parcel in South Salem, the Kreitzberg family sets aside 10 acres of land for other families?and their dogs?to come and explore more than 15,000 potential Christmas trees, including douglas firs, grand firs, and noble firs. A pond, a barn, and abundant wildlife swirl together to form a picturesque backdrop, and nearby, the Kreitzbergs manage warm bonfires and pass out complimentary hot apple cider and coffee.
