It’s 2008 and Tobie Theis is thinking about her next move. For 15 years she’s been sharpening her hair- and nail-styling skills while working in a number of different salons. But, she wants the autonomy to fulfill her potential and make her vision for a salon real. Together with her husband Joe, the two set off to finally achieve a mutual lifelong dream: owning their own salon. Since that bold step, Tobie has overseen the blossoming of Eden's Apple Salon & Day Spa into a full-service beauty oasis that offers everything from haircuts and extensions to massages and tanning. Within three months, Tobie and Joe had completely renovated the interior of the salon, filling it out with arched thresholds, shelves full of salon products, and a wall-sized mural of a beautiful woman. In time, her team also grew, now including eight hairstylists, two aestheticians, a licensed massage therapist, a nail technician, and the woman in the mural—whose large eyes can spot any aesthetic imperfections.

As a teenager, Brad Hogle suffered from many health problems?from pounding headaches and chronic vertigo to weak ligaments, he was rarely comfortable. After visiting numerous doctors' offices and seeing little improvement, his lifelong interest in martial arts led him to research Eastern therapies. With this knowledge, he developed a set of daily stretches and exercises that helped him overcome his ailments. A new believer in the potency of alternative healing practices, Brad then went on to become a licensed massage therapist and open Vibe Shiatsu in 2011. All of his treatments begin with an assessment that involves closely examining each client. By noticing the way a person breathes, as well as their arm, leg and spine movements, Hogle is able to predict the best way to release large amounts of tension. Alternatively, an assessment may also show him where to direct his focus, so that he may help heal an overlooked area. To complement Hogle's massage therapy, Vibe Shiatsu's decor exudes a professional-yet-peaceful aura, where sleek off-white walls bear photography by one of Brad's friends and finger paintings by big-name CEOs.

Formal dance lessons and dance meditation have taught her the importance of being present in your own body, which she relates to creating comfort and relaxation during massage therapy.

The body has the capacity to heal itself. If Kelli Scott could teach her clients at Starfire Family Clinic one thing, it would be that. Whether placing acupuncture needles along their meridians, explaining the benefits of Chinese herbs, or easing stress from their muscles with shiatsu massage, she keeps that principle in mind. But she also tries to make it stick in her clients. Throughout each of her treatments, Kelli teaches people to listen to their bodies, to note signs of disharmony, and to try to heal themselves before those imbalances grow into major problems. And yet, inspired by the holistic healing properties of ancient Chinese medicine, Kelli draws on her extensive medical-school training and time spent volunteering in Nepal as an acupuncturist to deliver thoughtful care to each of her patients.
