For more than 35 years, guests of Courthouse Athletic Club have conquered every hindrance to personal health, taking advantage of a multilayered approach that addresses fitness, diet, and broader facets of well being. Beyond basic features such as weight training, cardiovascular equipment, and immobile floors that force walking, membership grants access to more than 320 group fitness classes that populate each week's schedule, integrating practices such as Pilates and yoga along with aqua Zumba and Jazzercise. Courthouse Athletic Club's personal trainers follow the philosophy that being fit means being empowered to embark on any kind of adventure you want. A core tenet within that philosophy is the belief in fun. The staff does not emphasize a rating system or hierarchy, instead evaluating progress in terms of whether clients become more able to experience an enjoyably active life. Onsite childcare providers take care of young ones while parents work out, and many youth activities also keep kids busy, including swimming and special-needs dance classes. Courthouse Athletic Club is also part of a network of 70 clubs in the Pacific Northwest; members can work out at those facilities as guests when on the road.
Exercise is for everyone. That's the belief at The Lotus Studio, where classes include yoga, Zumba, dance, and specifically designed fitness classes for seniors. Yoga classes range from flow-style and power yoga to relaxing yin yoga and chair yoga classes for those with weight-barring limitations. Zumba, meanwhile, feels more like a party than a workout, as participants burn calories while moving to easy-to-follow dance steps set to international rhythms. Kids get to have fun during Tumble Bugs gymnastics, ballet, and other dance classes to distract them from asking for a pony before every meal.
At DEFY Aerial Fitness Studio, exercisers dangle from cascading strips of silk and pull off airborne feats of acrobatic prowess on low trapeze bars during exhilarating workouts. Small groups hover above the ground, stretching limbs into graceful motions that strengthen cores. Instructors also lead workshops that impart martial arts and Parkour techniques, such as vaulting, balancing, and quadrupedal movements that dramatically increase the chances of escaping an orangutan pursuit, unless that orangutan also studied Parkour. In addition to their regular class schedule, instructors host an open gym session that gives students time to practice their skills and further stick it to gravity.
Jacqulyn McDougal, Nisa Windsong-Frazier, and Dr. Jen Bogus co-founded Soul Pilates and Wellness to combine their talents for bodywork, fitness, and naturopathic medicine. Jacqulyn specializes in therapeutic massages, using deep-tissue and neuromuscular techniques to dissolve tension and lingering resentment of your successful cousins that is stored in muscles. In Pilates classes that use either mats or a wall-mounted piece of equipment called a SpringBoard, Nisa helps guests build core strength using full-body resistance exercises. Finally, Dr. Jen uses naturopathic medicine to treat ailments such as allergies, chronic pain, and debilitating fear of the zoo. The three founders of Soul Pilates and Wellness also offer group fitness classes such as yoga and Zumba.
At The Fit Corps, certified personal trainers welcome beginners and experienced athletes alike for group classes, personal training, and health coaching. During group classes, exercisers push their limits in circuit and strength training with heavy battling ropes, kettlebells, weight lifting, full-body functional suspension training, and more. They also move to fluid rhythms in Zumba or stretch out in yoga. In the gym’s space, members can lift weights and work on their core exercises.
