Voted Best Coffee & Tea in Alameda County by KRON 4’s Best of the Bay in 2009, Eon Coffee incorporates health-oriented ingredients and specialty-grade arabica coffee beans into a plethora of café dishes and drinks. The shop’s roast master manually roasts rich flavor into small batches of organic, fair-trade beans before filtering the grounds with pi water. Baristas then stir in assorted flavored syrups and handmade espresso to fashion caffeinated favorites such as cappuccinos, vanilla lattes, and seasonal frappes. Eon Coffee’s commitment to healthy drinks goes far beyond its smoothie offerings; sugar-blocking mulberry and other antioxidants fuse with steaming mugs of tea and iced lemonades to refresh and nourish the body better than a morning swim in a vat of orange juice.
The café’s chefs churn out tasty sandwiches, wraps, and paninis filled with Omega-3-rich krill, concealing a hefty punch of vitamins within flavorful entrees available for dine-in or carryout. Live performers occasionally take to the café’s stage to pluck out a few tunes for the guests lounging over drinks in the café’s plush seating, basking in the sunlight of the outdoor patio, or trying to decipher the haiku the barista wrote in their latté’s foam.
Much like the concoctions they?re named for, the story behind The Cupcake Shoppe is short but sweet. In 2011, Yolanda Diaz and her daughter Rosie started an online bakery. Within months, their treats became so popular that they had to invest in a full-sized confection facility. Since then, the Cupcake Shoppe has expanded their menu to include traditional, liquor-infused, and specialty cupcakes, including a french-toast-and-bacon version that nabbed top honors at the 2012 San Francisco Cupcake Challenge.
Yolanda and Rosie?s other cakes stretch the size spectrum, from cake pops and mini cupcakes to full-size custom cakes decorated for holidays and special occasions. The ladies also craft caramel apples and cookies that, like most thermometers, work best when dipped in chocolate. Their treats have even attracted some celebrity crushes: comedian George Lopez and 49ers running back Frank Gore have been spotted in the shop, and the cupcakes were also featured in the gift bags at the 2012 Daytime Emmy Awards. The Cupcake Shoppe was also featured in the 2013 edition of Cupcake Wars.
A native of Paris, Executive Chef Christian Nam-Hee sharpened his knife skills and his palate at l'Ecole de Paris des M?tiers de la Table. Today he lets his know-how blossom and wander in the kitchen of Bijou Restaurant & Bar, blending the culinary traditions of his homeland with the flavors found in northern California's seasonal organic ingredients. From his pans and cutting boards spring forth sweet-potato frites, quail stuffed with napa cabbage, and other dishes that embody the menu's inventive fusion spirit. The centerpiece is the bar, which glows a dreamy, iridescent amber that's complemented by ring chandeliers and absorbed by Italian leather chairs, a lounge area's plush velvet cushions, and tabletop black holes.
Hot Dog on a Stick Founder Dave Barham opened his first Hot Dog on a Stick in Santa Monica in 1946, and the company has since burgeoned into an employee-owned franchise that's more than 100 eateries strong and spans 11 states. Best known for a 100% turkey hot dog dunked in corn-bread batter made from Dave's mother's recipe and cooked in soy oil, Hot Dog on a Stick also pioneered the dipping and be-sticking of mild american and spicy jalapeño jack cheese. Smiling employees in red-, white-, and blue-striped uniforms with, as Dave put it, "a splash of lemonade," hand over cherry, lime, sugar-free, or original lemonade that they make fresh every two hours by squeezing Ventura County lemons until they cry.
Tacos Uruapan takes its name from the hometown of its founder, who began his journey into culinary mastery nearly three decades ago with a simple taco truck on a street corner. Today, the Solorio family continues to own and operate the fruits of his labors, dishing out handmade cornmeal sopes, plump burritos, and the ever-popular tacos at a handsome Mission-style restaurant that commands the corner of a busy intersection with a thatch of palm trees and even a pint-sized turret. Kid-friendly nachos, bean burritos, and quesadillas abound, but so do traditional Mexican options including fried pork carnitas and beef head and tongue.
Part salon and part spa, The Total Package staff weaves myriad body-beautifying services into its comprehensive aesthetic offerings. Stylists twist and turn hair into braids and updos or straighten and color locks with chemical procedures. Aestheticians turn their trained eyes to the body’s finer details by waxing away unwanted hair or tending to wrinkles and pores with rejuvenating facials or spare Halloween masks.
