Parkpoint Health Club has been a part of the Sonoma County landscape since 1983, when Bill and Lindy Buchanan opened their first health club in Santa Rosa. Over the last three decades, the club has earned its reputation with three locations, a diverse lineup of fitness equipment, a friendly and professional staff of trainers, and supplementary amenities such as massage therapy, facials, and nutritional counseling. Adults can get their sweat on in Pilates, yoga, cycling, and Zumba classes, and kids can enjoy after-school play in childcare or swimming in the pools in the summer.
At Energy Health Clubs’ two locations, members can feel the burn in the weight room, aboard cardio equipment, and during Group X classes such as Zumba, yoga, and spin or personal training sessions. Exercisers can work out until 10 p.m. Monday–Thursday at the Windsor location or visit Cotati, which is open 24 hours a day Tuesday–Thursday. The Cotati location also boasts a smoothie bar and indoor pool and both locations provide childcare services seven days a week.
The coaches at CrossFit Arise help clients build strength and stamina through natural, functional movements rather than traditional machine-based exercises. Their one-hour classes promote performance throughout the body by incorporating gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting, and sports techniques into the continually updated Workout of the Day. Guests can expect all manner of inventive approaches, from heaving kettlebells to shimmying up ropes to kissing pull-up bars after plying them with roses clenched between teeth.
Anytime Fitness, which boasts 1,689 clubs in North America, makes it easier for average folks to etch out time for exercise by doing one simple thing: staying open 24 hours a day for 365 days a year. As fitness seekers challenge themselves on cardio in clean, well-stocked facilities, security monitoring ensures they’re safe and producing enough sweat to meet official government standards. Members can also ramp up their exercise regimens with the help of Anytime Fitness’s staff of personal trainers, who demonstrate moves and sling motivating tips. After workouts, guests can shower in the private restrooms.
The spider-like staffers at Vertex Climbing Center support customers of all climbing abilities as they scale a variety of faux rock faces. During ClimbTime classes, experienced instructors belay and handle equipment while climbers focus on mastering walls and top-of-the-mountain yodeling routines. A collection of 35-foot walls jut skyward at varying difficulties, from steeply inclined slabs to fully inverted overhangs. Following supervised climbing lessons, patrons can move on to more advanced classes or take a belay test that qualifies them to guide friends indoors and brag to retired sailors about knot-tying superiority.
The studio at CrossFit Sonoma County pulses with high-intensity workout routines. Led by coaches Sarah Pierce and Dan Schmieding, who both compete in national CrossFit events and hold multiple CrossFit certifications, students undergo varied exercises from the scheduled Workout of the Day. Sarah and Dan circumnavigate the floor, guiding movements, ensuring safety, and gingerly removing any unnoticed "Kick Me" signs pinned to T-shirts. Combining weightlifting, gymnastics, and track-and-field techniques, CrossFit aims to build resilience, strength, and versatility, equipping students with the stamina for athletic and everyday activities. Instructors scale each workout up or down to accommodate individual levels of fitness or exercisers recovering from restrictive injuries. Encompassing more than 3,000 square feet, CrossFit Sonoma County’s gym—nicknamed “the playground”—houses atypical equipment such as pommel horses, suspended rings, tires, sledgehammers, and weight sleds to facilitate each patron’s fitness goals.
